Congratulations Rick on your new and improved toy! Now the fun begins, but first you have to go through the "learning curve" and become familiar with how to raise the mast and take it down; how all the rigging functions; - and most important of all - remember to have the centerboard UP and cleated when putting the boat back on the trailer................ Make yourself a sign: "C/B UP on Retrieve" until it is second nature. Hatch boards: As I told you I rebuilt mine using teak plywood, and added a vent louver in the top board that I bought at WEST. Fore deck vent: I have a Nicro Low Profile vent, but one of the Nicro flush vents (solar powered) may be a preferable solution because they supply needed ventilation, and keep the water out. The problem I have is that if the boat is at the marina; it rains and the wind blows; without a Dorade box under the vent, water goes down the open hole and your mattress gets a damp spot. Flotation foam: It's just loose Styrofoam logs lying under the cockpit sole, or stuffed in the forward compartment at the bow. Remove the screwed down cover on yours, and gain access to the extra storage space. That's where I stow my large Fortress anchor, chain and rode; and where my motorcycle battery will reside. You need weight forward in the vessel to keep from dragging the transom through the water. The web comments are that it is nice to have the bow pulpit. I don't, but now that I am used to the motion of the boat as I move around on the fore deck, it doesn't bother me not having it - but, it sure is a nice place to tie off a jib halyard while raising the mast; or as a hand hold for someone on a dock who is lending a hand as you come in.............. easier to grab than the shrouds. If your new M15 has the normal length tiller, sail with it first, and then you will understand why I built my tiller extension. You might want to use my idea just making it to a height at your knee that you find comfortable. At present mine is about 98% correct. I'd like it a tad higher at the handhold end to optimize it - but now that I have it built and it works, do I really want to redo it again for a 2% improvement? I guess that depends on how many rainy days we have, since that sort of thing is a rainy day project. Rick, do you have a deep sail locker and a shallow one as mine had before I modified it? Well gang I guess I'm officially in the club. I traveled 721 miles r.t. to Arlington, VA to purchase a well kept beauty from Tom Nichols. She's a 1985 M15 (hull #337) with an unpainted blue hull, 4 nice sails, 3hp Johnson, original cushsions in and out, a dropped bed trailer, bow pulpit and all the necesary equipment to sail right away. The more I work on her the more I realize I got a fine boat. The two down side things are a very sloppy application of Cetol (not by Tom) and what appears to be no built in flotation. There is loose flotation under the cockpit and the most forward locker under the berth is screwed down and apparently filled with the same loose styrafoam. I've had some success scrapping the Cetol off the fiberglass, but not at all successful at getting it off the vynil cushion covers. The floatation is still a mystery and will undoubtably be the subject of future inquires. The hatch boards are delaminated which will give me the opurtunity to build new ones with louvers to improve ventilation. I also see some type of foredeck ventilation, either a small hatch or a ventilator like Connie installed in his M15, comming in the future. My list of upgrades, after the Cetol mess is cleaned up and replaced with oil, will be a tiller extension (to get my weight further forward), buffing the hull to remove oxidation and some sort of bimini/cockpit tent to keep rain and bugs out. Oh yeah, and probably a sculling oar. Thanks to all on the list who helped me in my education and search for this great little yacht. Rick Langer Hudson River p.s. Connie, my first M15 experience on a bouncy foredeck was comforted by the bow pulpit. It had the same feel as the bigger boat that I'm use too. I think this deck ape would feel very lonely up there in a seaway without it.

Hi Bill. I have the same furler on Tullamore. I had a sleeve made which I only use for trailering. No zipper or anything to malfunction, it's really just a long sock which I slide over the furler and furled sail after I lay the mast down. It's then strapped to the mast with ball bungies. Protects the sail from abrasion and unravelling in the wind while driving down the road. Advice on furler sleeve.

I recently installed CMI FF2 furler and new genoa on my M-17 and plan to have protective sleeve made locally.The new sail has an anti UV strip attached. I would appreciate advice on type of material and methods of securing it (velcro, etc) and other personal observations re. utility from those with experience. The survey came out good. I was sent a written report, the cost was $300. I am stuck here in Sacramento so I thought it might be worth a shot.
