Trailer tires..

Hi Gang... Finally got around to freeing the bolts on the trailer...no big deal with an impact wrench <whew!!> Now for a new pair of tires. Someone mentioned WalMart having Douglas radials for about $30 or thereabouts. No one at my WalMart, or even their 800 customer service number knows about these, or any other trailer tires. I can get them at the local tire store, but $135/pair out the door is a tad steep if I can find cheaper ones somewhere. Any ideas?? Harvey/ Ga M-17 Stargazer #294

M15 Anchors

Doug, Regarding your query on M15 anchors: Ditto most of Connie's comments regarding multiple anchors and choice based on intended use. I carry a West 'Performance 6lb', a 4.4lb Bruce, and an 11lb Bruce. The latter is my storm anchor. I am partial to the Bruce (the real ones) for Pacific Northwest waters. It usually resets within a few anchor lengths when/if it pulls out. I use 20' of chain and 300' of 'Premium' New England Ropes three strand. I cannot speak with experience regarding the 'Hooker' brand packaged by Cabella's, but I will convey what I have heard regarding Danforth copies--namely that some are very poor substitutes due to slight variances in fluke-to-shank angles, poor welds and/or metal composition, inadequate corrosion protection, etc. Again, this might not be true of the 'Hooker', but I would want to see some confirmation and/or test data before purchasing. With the exception of the small West Performance anchor on the M15, I have always used Danforth H.T. (high tensile) with excellent results/longevity. I recently purchased an Aluminum Fortress as anchor #3 for my Flicka (Bruce 16.5 and CQR 25 are numbers one and two). It disassembles and stores below in its own bag (which I would never do if it were a primary anchor). The fortress is very well made, has tested extremely well, but is very expensive. Also, beware cheap chain and/or rode sometimes provided in packages. Finally, I once designed an elaborate anchor roller setup for the M15. I was about to fabricate it when I realized that I would still have to heft the rode/chain bag forward each time. I now deploy from the port cockpit locker where two of the three anchors reside. I then walk forward (pass around shroud) and hook to a carabiner (padded with electrical tape so as to not mar fiberglass at tip of bow) hooked to forward/large eye of stem fitting. This has worked well, and I doubt I will ever do a roller. Retrieval is reverse of deployment. I have a pad that I fling from cockpit lid over combing/deck to protect from chain, etc. Scott M15 #478 'bebe' PSC Flicka

Doug, Yes, two anchors are normal practice in the islands. We overnight with two Danforths to avoid tripping one out and do a single anchor only for daytime trips. I also use fisherman and northhill anchors...which work well in all bottoms and hook to rocks. 90% of the offshore commercial headboats here have northills hanging off the bow for reef fishing. Virtually no Bruce or CQR types are seen in the commercial fleets...possibly due to size of boat (55' up). I tried an aluminum fluke anchor (identical to a 40lb Danforth) but it was too light to depress the bottom and dig in. Small Danforths have the same problem in hard sand. My M10 dink had a 2.5S lb. Danforth but the thing was so light it wouldn't dig in anything but soft sand without help. It was replaced with a 4S lb. and works better. I've had such good luck with Danforths I don't do much experimenting anymore...the bottoms I cruise in are made for Danforth types. West Marine has a small bruce that looks just right for my 17' outboard and I've been thinking of trying one though.

A 9lb Danforth (aka the old 8S Danforth) is massive for a 15' boat in soft sand bottoms. A 14lb (aka the old 13S Danforth) will hold a 15'r in 100+ mph hurricanes easily...and probably rip the cleats off before dragging. This may help the perspective...I cruised the Bahamas several years on a 28' x 10,000lb ketch and used 13 standards as working anchors. We typically anchored in sand or 6" high grass and used 8' of chain with 1/2 nylon rodes. We experienced near hurricane winds in open anchorages and the 13 standards never moved an inch. The storm anchor was a 22lb standard Danforth. I also used 22lb standards for working anchors on a 42' x 24,000lb cutter and a 40lb standard for storms. All used in hard or soft sand and grass. The downside of Danforths is you can trip them if the tide or wind changes. I don't own an M15 but thinking for anchors would be two 9lb Danforths, 4'-6' of chain and 3/8" diameter nylon for working anchors. Storm anchor would be a 14S. If you go with a CQR be sure it is the right bottom. I've owned and used them on sand and grass. If they hit a submerged shell or rock it can point the anchor up and make it plow out of the bottom and drag. I saw this more than a few times in the Bahamas and not uncommon. I equate a 25lb plow and 25' of chain as almost equal to a 14lb Danforth and 8' of chain in sandy/grassy bottoms. Bill P.
