Hi Connie.. >>I see no reason why a mast top mounted antenna and it's coax cable couldn't be plugged into the same radio antenna connection.<< The connector that I bought for my HH C/Band fits my HH Uniden as well (after removing the duck whip) My only thought would be a proper impedance match twixt HH and masthead antenna. If the impedance doesn't match, there may be enough power loss to negate the benefit of the external antenna. Tomorrow I mock up the boom tent for the canvas guy and depending on how much time is left, wire up the fishfinder, etc... Is it sailing season yet? :o) Tod

Hi Harvey, FWIW: My STANDARD hand held VHF radio has a screw in flexible antenna. I see no reason why a mast top mounted antenna and it's coax cable couldn't be plugged into the same radio antenna connection. Why not call the Service Department of your radio manufacturer and ask them if it can be done, and how............? Connie

Hi Doug, Living in Mpls, Mn, I have traveled to and sailed the Apostles many times. It has mainly been chartering larger boats out of Port Superior which is just south of Bayfield. I have sailed C+C's, Catalinas, Pearsons, and an Island Packet through the charterhouse. When I found my M17 in 1996, it was in that area. My trial sail with her was in October (beautiful day) and sailed from Little Sand Bay on the mainland out to and around Sand and York Islands. The Apostles are absolutely beautiful and it is mainly sailboats in the area. Lots of anchoring on the lee sides of the islands and Bayfield has a quaint New England feel to it. Keep in mind you are dealing with lake Superior so watch the weather closely and the water is VERY cold. Have a great time, I may be up there second week of June. But given the fast-paced evolution of technology, I'll ask it again: Does any manufacturer make a hand-held to which you can attach a coax for a mast-mount antenna, to increase its range (not that you'd necessarily NEED to)?<< I've used an adapter to connect my HH CB to an antenna on the car roof when travelling...it also plugs into my Marine Uniden HH, but I've no mast antenna to test it out. I see no reason why you couldn't get an adapter to connect a mast mounted antenna. My only question is....would the impedance match?? This one came from Radio Shack. Both connectors on my HH's are "N" connectors, IIRC. Best to take your HH to Rat Shack and get it fitted. Shouldn't cost more'n a few $$$. Harvey/Ga M-17 Stargazer #294

transmission cooler

Will I need a transmission cooler?<< I installed a tranny cooler when I had U-haul install the hitch on my 3L '92 Ford Aerostar. It was rated at 3500 pounds towing, IIRC. I decided that the cooler would be good insurance. I now tow with a '99 Nissan Pathfinder, towing cap. of 5000 pounds. They said that it had a factory cooler that was bigger then the standard cooler. If you can swing the extra $$$, I'd ger the cooler, if only for peace of mind/insurance.
