M17 Whisker / gin pole suggestions

Greetings, I fly a furling 135% head sail on my M17 and want to build a whisker pole to do double duty : a, use as a gin pole with mast raising, and b, as a down wind pole for the headsail. Any opinions regarding 1.0 versus 1.25 inch diameter or larger and your experiences would help me in complementing my rig. Thanks, Bruce

Hey Sal, I love Hondas ...great motors. I have found my Yamaha to be just as reliable ,though, and it has one very cool feature. Then shift lever is on the tiller/throttle mechanism. VERY nice to be able throttle and shift with the same hand without turning around backwards to reach the other side of the motor to shift...especially when docking.....just food for thought. :-) Not sure if the 5hp are the same way or not. On the S2, it happens to be to port, where the cockpit locker lid on an M15 or M17's is located, but there is no reason a similar construction couldn't be employed on center at the stern. The locker lid protects the can mostly from the sun, keeps it in place, and serves as a continuation of the bench seating. The front is open. On the S2, a wooden fiddle blocks most of the can at sole level, although it would've been more maintenance-free (not to mention less build labor) if it had just been a raised molded fiddle. Thanx Todd, We've had similar reliability with our Honda's. We were working with Jerry last weekend on the Sage design. He sure is a pleasure to work with. He wants to put a lazerette at the back of the cockpit for the exterior tank. He's planning a vertical bulkhead to separate the lazerette from the interior and use small vents high on the stern for ventilation.
