I have a tricolor AND an anchor light at my masthead. The tricolor is valid for sailing craft only whne under sail. The white portion is a stern light and doesn't qualify as an anchor light since it isn't all around white. Also, the Coast Guard allows craft under 16 ft to use a lantern or some other white light as an anchor light ... well they did when I took my Captains test a few years ago. One note, when we were in the North Channel in June, the local boats used a very small light as an anchor light, They certainly wouldn't meet the 2 mile requirement. I just tested it, and it works great, producing 1.7 gallons per hour, a bit more than the advertised rate of 1.4 gal/hr. For your information, there seem to be quite a few of these for sale for about that price. They look like (military?) units that have been in storage for several years. Mine was dated Nov 2002, which would be 4 years 11 months. The eBay description said Katadyn tech support said it would need a new membrane, but experience has shown that if it hasn't dried out, it is just fine. In any case it is easy to test, just mix up 5 ounces of non-iodized salt to a gallon of water. Make sure you re-apply the biocide (available from Katadyn for about $20) when you are done. Katadyn gives conflicting information about the shelf life. On instructions for an older Survivor 35, they say: "The unit is designed to be stored continuously for up to 4 years." and later: "After 3-4 years of continuous storage, the desalinator should be tested and the storage procedure repeated. After 6-8 years of storage, the unit should be serviced: contact the manufacturer. " I must say this is one of those mechanical devices I just love to hold in my hands, and watching it turn salt water into fresh, is like watching an alchemist turn lead into gold. If you want one of these, now is the time to act. You can use the money you save to get an EPIRB. Fiberglass repair

Ahoy skippers I have replaced the steel with lead in Pelican. I need to repair the large holes in the keel. Any one know of experts in fiberglass repair around southern California? Regardig changing M15 center board pennant

Rich, I changed my 1982 M15's center board pennant and removed the pin. I'm glad I did since the pin had rusted away in spots and the center board had a crack in it by the pin hole. I also found the center board had several other cracks and some swelling. I fixed the cracks, ground down the swollen area and put a new pin in. As long as I was doing the pennant, it was worth my time to have an almost new center board in the proper shape. Norm M15 #172

Hi, The bolt at the back of the keel trunk on my older model M-17 was actually a bolt with a nut embedded in resin. changing the centerboard pennant
