Introduction

Hello all... just a quick note to introduce myself. I live in western Montana and am a sea kayaker who's been bitten by the sailing bug. I don't own a sailboat yet, but have been doing a ton of research and have come to the conclusion that a M17 would be the perfect boat for us (my wife and I, with the occasional daysailing guest. We live near Flathead Lake, a pretty big "mini ocean" (it's the largest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi....) and would love to eventually trailer west and explore Puget Sound and points north. As kayakers we really like to get into the shallow out of the way places the big boats can't get to, so the M17's shoal draft definitely appeals to me. When I first started looking into boats, I was attracted to the WWPotter 19, especially the beachability, and positive flotation, but I'm getting the feeling that the Montgomery is a lot more boat... tougher and more seaworthy. (not a small consideration on Flathead and some of the other cruising areas that interest us.) I'd be interested in hearing people's comments and opinions about how the two boats compare, both in build and sailing manners. Coming from the quiet world of kayaking, the idea of a boat that sails well is important. I'd love to be able to never have to start the motor all season... Anyone out there moving up to a bigger boat who's got a M17 that they're ready to part with? I'm not adverse to putting in some "sweat equity" on the right boat, so old is fine. (ok better even... I've got a kid in college and a less expensive boat I can work on as money permits would be great!) At any rate, I look forward to listening in, learning and finding out more about the M-boats and sailing in general. regards, Matthew Lyon

Welcome Matt.. A good clean used M_17 will do the job on Flathead Lake for you. Montgomery sailboats are fantastic sailboats. They go upwind well. They are built strong and with quality components. They are properly ballasted and self righting. They were properly designed by professional people who knew what was required. They hold their value. Potters...?.... Lousy sailing characteristics; won't tack in strong winds. etc. Won't go upwind very well. Built lite with plastic and pop-rivets Not Ocean Worthy at all. Not really self righting or not enough proper ballast to do the job right. Design?....Its a rowboat with a cabin. Can be had cheap on the used market. (for a reason) And I'am sugar coating it. Auto Tiller and Sailing Channel Islands

Jim, I installed a Simrod TP10 on my M15, but have not given it much of a work out. Fuh Shing Pan's M15 uses a group 24 battery I believe. He uses this on the annual Potter Catalina trip which lasts three days. But, it is only used for the trip over and back. He may be lurking on the list and could answer your question. I'm in Ventura and would be interested in your Channel Islands cruise. Norm M15 #172

M-15 Self Steering

Have any of you skippers installed self steering on your M-15? I once had Aries windvane on my 32 ft Islander and it worked very well. Captsin Sadler, Sorry, wish I had more memory than hair, but both are gone. I Anchored Joy off my shore home, had a solar charger, rarely stayed out over two days at a time, and would occasionally use a battery charger to shore power while beached. So, the answer on how long my battery would last is I haven't the foggiest! Check specs on newer autopilots, usually different battery drains for "holding course" and "correcting course," and a tender boat like an M15 changes her course every time you shift your gum to the other side of your mouth. I presently have two Group-27 Deep Cycles in Rejoyce!'s bilge to power her auxiliary, a 54 pound thrust trolling motor mounted just aft the keel. My third boat to go for electric auxiliary, I am obviously sold. But now I keep her in a marina with power at the slip, so recharging is no problem. My last one used solar chargers, 0.3 amp max charge rate, and I rarely had to drag the charger and long extension cord down to my private dock. John Butler, not a Captain, just a retired CG Commander. Do it now! You can't do it any younger…

Jerry Montgomery

My subscription to Small Craft Advisor was going to expire with this last issue and I hadn't decided whether to continue since I'm retiring and am on a spend less mode. Then I read "Small Talk with Jerry Montgomery"- about renewing his acquaintance with Geoff Prindle of Prindle Cat fame. It was a wonderful article filled with Jerry Montgomery humor. Priceless!! It never said one word about the Prindle 18, just a story of two old boats builders getting together. Incidentally, what is so great about the Prindle 18? I renewed my subscription for another year just to hear what Jerry will have to say in the next six issues. thank you, Jerry! Rich Cottrell
