I have just been lurking here for quite some time now and this is my first post on this board. This type of thread is the reason I joined the board... to see how new boat orders are handled. Due to what I've read on another board that Bob was a member of five years ago, I have been extremely apprehensive about placing an order. I would love to get an Montgomery, but want a smooth process. I would like to hear from everyone who has ordered a boat in the past five or so years, and how well you order was handled... basically seven the questions that Tod posed. 2hp Honda

Bert, I have a 3 hp Johnson on my boat. It evidently had the same problem you describe. The PO put a piece of 3/4" wood on the aft side of the fixed mount which effectively moves the outboard aft that amount. This was just enough to solve the problem. I haven't looked at the mounting throat of the outboard, but there might be room there to allow you to use a thicker piece of wood. Some have suggested building a height extension and that might work, but it might also raise your short shaft Honda too high out of the water when the engine is in use. Hey! Here's something happy we can talk about! Just wanted to throw out a Congratulations! to Chris and Jeff Packer on their acquisition of the "Tucson" 23. As many of us can relate to, buying a boat such a long distance from home throws in a lot of logistics and expense to pull the deal off. Obviously, these folks have a real love of the Montgomery line. Sounds like they have big plans for her and are very excited to get started getting her back up to speed. It's awesome that someone who is really excited about this boat for what she is got a hold of her. Sounds like Jo and I are going to get to meet them next week. They are going to stop by Lake Havasu with their new baby in tow on the way from Tucson to WA. Can't wait! We are hoping to 'wet their whistle" with a sail on Dauntless while they are here. I know that they'll be able to depend on the MSOG family to help them out with anything they need during the restoration process. If it wasn't for all you guys out there, Dauntless would probably still be on boat stands in the back yard. I'd still be scratching my head trying to figure out what the heck to do with her, and 'Jo,,,,,,well, she'd have probably left me in search of someone who had a boat that actually floated! Bet you didn't know that the not only does the MSOG help with you boats...but they save marriages as well! (Although I must say, I actually was a little worried about loosing her to Gary Hyde up in the San Juans. Gary's great company,good looks, superb taste in wine, and of course the Cougar Gold Cheese almost made me a single guy again! Watch out for that guy! lol) Hey Larry, looks like the roster for San Juans 09 is growing!!! On another note. Finally it's sailing season here again in the southwest. Dauntless' first local sale of the season was yesterday on the heels of a cold front (ok, ok an "cool"front). We had 10-20 knots all day with a high of around 80 degrees. Gotta love that. After one of the hottest summers we've ever had ( I thought I was going to melt a few times at work!) it's a welcomed change. As the northern season winds down, please know there's an open invite to come on down and sail with us....... hmmmmmm....what's this..........uh, Gary H........Jo said to make sure I invite you! ;-) Say it with me now.....Lake of the Woods!, Lake of the Woods!, Swarm! So far nobody answered your question about bedding hardware to the deck. Boat Life Caulk is made to cure in the air and doesn't fully harden. It's made for fittings above the waterline. West Marine & others have it. Sand smooth,oil, let dry, I use 0000 Steel wool between coats maybe 5 or 6 coats, this lasts about 6 mos. in the Arizona sun. If you are farther North or cover the boat it should last a long time. Make sure the oil is 100% Tung oil - not Tung oil varnish or Tung oil finish. Big difference in durability. A quart should do a 15 or 17 for 5 years or so. I have replaced the railwood and hatch slide wood with "Starboard" UHDPE(?) or something like that. Best thing I ever did to the exterior of my boat- little bit of work with a router but not rocket surgery. No funky lookin' bolted on wood to sand and re-oil ALL the time - except those handrails. hello out in Monty Land, I am considering a self furling head sail for my M-17. A couple of things come to mind: do they present any difficulties when rigging and derigging the boat for trailing? Presently, I sail in light winds with a big "Drifter", I assume however that it would not be possible to hank on the drifter if I had a self furling rig. Thanks in advance for the input. WIlly - the handrails are refinished off the boat - I should also state - wear eye protection, gloves, a proper respirator for the materials at hand, be sure to request and understand all MSDS for materials, this is free information gleaned over the internet - any monkey with a keyboard is suddenly an expert - Beware.
