Capt. Sadler, I installed an electronic tiller control on my my first M15 "JOY", don't recall the specifics off hand, but it did very well except in hard gusts when it could not react fast or hard enough. One of the sailing magazines, perhaps two decades back, did a survey of installed autopilots, and Joy had the distinction, in their final report, of being the smallest sailboat with an electronic autopilot. May consider it again, don't know yet. I'll throw my 2 cents worth on this topic as I recently have had a change of heart as how to best finish exterior teak. All of Dauntless' teak was recently re-finished with the new Cetol color "natural teak". It was the easiest finish I have ever applied. It looks good, not as good as varnish, but good. And it seems pretty tough. If I can get away with one maintenance coat a year, like advertised, I'm absolutely thrilled with it. Practical Sailor reviews exterior wood finishes in this months issue and gave it high marks. The "natural teak" does not have the orange hue that has been associated with past Cetol products which is what drove me to give it a try. Previously, I oiled our boats exterior teak. I love the look of oiled teak. The AZ sun, though, would require almost weekly applications of oil to keep up. And varnish.....well.....I end up stepping on, walking on, sitting on, dropping stuff on, and generally abusing everything I varnish no matter how hard I try not to. This usually occurs within the first ten minutes that my prized varnished job has dried to a mirror finish. (Bull in the China Shop Syndrome) I'll leave the exterior varnish for the museum boats! 9' Dinghy

Ahoy to All dinghy owners, I bought a 9' about five years back, and never did anything with it until finding the Montgomery owners website by googling MMP. The poor thing was found half sunk, and very neglected, but at one time must have been a fine tender, because of its cutom sailrite cover. The sailing dinghy is all complete except I'm not sure how the boom gooseneck assy. attaches to the fiberglass two piece tapered mast. Can anyone provide a photo of this assembly? The reg number on the transom is: MMP091740683 If I read this correctly, is that hull no# 174, built June of 1983? My family and I sail out of East Greenwich RI, using a Puffin dinghy tending to our Seasprite 27. I would appreciate any info on this old boat. It has sat next to my garage ever since I purchase it. Tom, We should give the Cetol a good workout. I use the boat almost daily when I'm not at work so the teak is pretty well uncovered all the time. I do cover the tiller and rudder which are varnished with Interlux 2 part Perfection over top of West System clear coat epoxy (an experiment I decided to try). I'll let you know how it stands up. Howard, I'll try to get some photos of Dauntless' arrangement today when we go down to her. The previous owner did some mods to ours stove setup to allow access below it for storage. The ice box actually forms the top step and is very large. We always get at least 20lbs of ice or the bottom of it isn't even covered. I would say the insulation is Ok but not fantastic and getting to it to get more in there looks difficult unless you installed the insulation on the inside of the box somehow. One nice feature is that the ice box bottom has a built in drain, which goes to a pump and then to a second spigot over the sink. A tiptoe foot-pump is original hardware. Labor intensive but no need for electrical power. I believe the volume of the box is 6 cubic feet, so there's lots of room for block ice for an extended cruise. Like all iceboxes, the fuller it is the better it works. Dead air space seems to allow the ice to melt much faster. I'll get those pics and email you offline.
