I have made 4 cockpit covers and 2 dodgers for my boats over the years, including for my previously owned M 15. I have the following suggestions to make it easier. (I have trouble working with patterns, but if you don't, it is a great way to go as previously suggested.) 1. This can be done on any sewing machine with a # 18 needle. Although a machine, like those sold by Sail Rite make it easier. 2. Lay your material, the one you are going to use for your finished product, over the boom. 3. Clip it together where the longitudinal seams will go with spring clamps. (The seams should run port to starboard.) Leave material under the seams to sew it together.) 4. Using a stapler, staple the bottom edges where you want them. 5. When you go home, you can cut the extra material off and then sew. Pull the staples out as you are sewing. 6. For tie downs, make sure you use spur grommets. They won't tear the material in heavy winds. 7. Once you completed the basic "tent" , go to work at the front and back. (You can even get fancy and install "windows" and then make window covers for them.) Note: make sure you can easily enter enclosure from the inside, outside, dock, etc. 8. Again, use the clamps to set the material, and then use a stapler. 9. If the material bunches up because of curves, etc., staple in darts. I highly recommend The Complete Canvasworker's Guide by Jim Grant. I found it very helpful. I hope this makes sense. How many pages do you want, Ron? We've had a Montgomery rendezvous in the islands the last 4 years and there's quite a few sailors on the list that could give you tips on sailing there. I believe there's a trip report on two on the MSOG website that tells about our cruises. We're skipping 2008 (or at least I won't be organizing it), but if you want to wait a year we'll be getting together again in 2009. We've always launched in Anacortes. They have a lift there for a reasonable fee so you don't have to put your trailer in salt water, good long term parking, a nice marina, and all the facilities you might need within walking distance in the town. From there it's just a 2 or 3 hour sail out the Guemes channel, across the Rosario Strait, and into the islands. I won't even try to cover all your options there! Great anchorages, nice marinas, beautiful hikes and sunsets, seals, eagles, orcas, ..... If you have more specific questions feel free to ask me off line, or get ideas from more of the group. Depending on the time of year, be prepared to motor up to half the time (if you're trying to reach a specific location). The winds can be erratic due to the islands themselves blocking and channeling the winds. If you haven't yet, I would recommend getting a good cruising guide to the area, like "Gunkholing in the San Juan Islands" or the "Dreamspeaker" guide. You'll definitely want a Canadian Current Atlas and the corresponding Washburnes Tables to show the strength and direction of the tidal currents for every hour of the day. Plan your route by the currents, not the wind. They're more dependable. Larry

Cockpit or boom tent sources for M17

Does anyone have a source for a good quality cockpit tent for an M17? Would like to make use of that area for overnighting...should the boat ever get delivered. Anyone using one? Issues, suggestions? Also, we will be doing the bottom primer and paint. Any recommendations, experience with the Interlux products for salt water? Stacy Smith

I've experienced the same thing as Tim on both my old M-17 and on Dauntless. When you really start pushing the boat through some chop or swell, if you go below, you can here the keel trunk "breathing through the pendant hole. Tim's description of it as a "blowhole" is spot-on, cause when she "exhales" (when the water is forced back up the trunk) a small blast of water and air is pushed through the pendant hole. Not sure of anything that can be done about it except let it dry out later on, and it's nice to have the peac of mind that you know where the heck that water came from! Oh yeah,...for what it's worth.. Gary O. took Gary V's suggestion of checking weather underground for wind speeds for the day I stated 30+ knots. Scott 'Frenchy' sailing my M-17 -Looks Bad/ Goes Fine! - at the recent "Lake Havasu Ran Tan for Wrinkle Boats and all other Sailcraft" The wind speed is unknown at this time but the drink was Dos Equis and Tecate, snacks were Bleu Cheese and ham rolls in 'Secret Sauce'. No cigars were present. M-222, M-26, C-25, WWP 19, M-23 and this thing were present. It did blow just shy of 60 mph that night and no one stayed on the lake for giggles. I just can't see why not?? The following morning we pulled this boat out of the water, de rigged and went sailing on Dauntless at approx, 11:30 till 13.15. It was breezy. I recall (and checked at weatherunderground 'History') it was blowing 26-36 mph and gusts 36.8- 43.7 mph. The boat was a very well behaved lady, plenty of drive - the driver, "Frenchy King o the Goats"commented on the almost perfectly neutral helm,and a VERY comfortable motion for the roller/chop that was present. I did not steer. (PS - watching these videos is like watching a Frank Sinatra performance on YouTube - just LIKE you were there huh??? yeah!) On the way back to the marina we sailed at approx. 70 dgrees to the waves - waddled back to the corner, made the turn North and upon arriving in Thompson Bay at the mouth of the London Bridge Channel and Marina entrance it was blowing even harder - blasting the tops of the waves off into mist, 1+ foot whitecaps immediately off the beach at the Bridge Channel -wind out of the North!, Coots were donning scuba gear, wood ducks screaming for mercy! I swear - I was there. No beer or tequila was consumed on this sail. The facts have not been clouded. If Sean and Jo do this again, I am going to show up for a good time again! Hello everyone and thanks for the suggestions and advice. Gary, I am starting to wonder if perhaps I was taking water occasionally through the pendant hole and just didn't notice. I did get quite a splash through it when I raised the centerboard the last time we were out. I will probably finish the previous owner's cut around the base of the centerboard trunk and using some thickened epoxy and fiberglass just re-enforce the joint. I at least feel better knowing what was under the caulk that the previous owner had layed down. I checked under the boat this morning after pouring 5 gallons of water into it and none seemed to have leaked out. I sucked the water out this morning with the shop vac and it looks like I was able to recover all 5 gallons so at leas I don't think the water is still trapped somewhere in the boat. That would be bad since my pole barn is not heated and it is about to get really cold in MN. So I at least have the piece of mind knowing that at least that part of the boat is waterproof. Bones, I plan on removing the centerboard in the next couple of weeks, the pendant looks relatively new and the centerboard looks recently painted, but I think I would like to get a layer of epoxy on it, besides it gives me something else to do since we can't be out on the water. Has anyone ever installed an access hatch in the keel trunk? It would sure make future pendant replacements a lot easier and give better access to assess the centerboard's condition.
