Hey thanks for your experienced advice, Bill. Still don't understand though. I appreciate you sticking with me here.... I understand that the spinnaker tack attaches ahead of the forestay, but on MY boat anyway, that would just mean it would hit the bow pulpit all that much more, since the bow pulpit is just fore of the forestay -- UNLESS it is raised up so that the foot of the spinnaker were ABOVE the pulpit -- is that what you mean? OR -- has anyone ever thought of a bowsprit on an M15, or is that crazy? I seem to remember tanbark being some sort of goop that you soaked the (cotton) sail in so that it might last longer. I wanted tanbark sails for Dolphin to reduce glare, but the cloth that I wanted was only available in white. A boom bail is a metal strap in a U or V shape whose ends are attached to the sides of the boom (through-bolt, drill/tap/machine screw/Pop-rivet -- you name it). The idea is that something is attached to it -- probably the mainsheet block or the boom vang. In other words it's just a convenient way to attach a line to the boom. If I remember correctly the M-15 boom has a cast aluminum fitting at the end with a hole in it for attaching the mainsheet block, so you would only need one for attaching a boom vang. Just in case: A vang is a line that runs between the base of the mast and somewhere along the boom whose function is to pull the boom down -- keeps the sail flatter when the mainsheet is out. I have a boom vang and I use it a lot when I race. It keeps the boom from lifting when on a run thus reducing effective sail area. It isn't necessary to have one on a M17 but I sometimes use it when recreational sailing (especially when "racing" Catalina 22s *L*), and I like to have it onboard as an emergency back up to the main sheet. Greetings. We have a simple vang on our Potter 15, and it does indeed come in handy sometimes. At other times, it's simply in the way, especially when the boat is already crowded with passengers. Our answer is to mount the vang with quick pins, making installation and removal a matter of moments. It's the best of both worlds! Fair Winds, Steve Tyree, P-15 #2098 "Amy Ann"

To add a question to Giles last comment, do any of you M17 sailors use a boom vang? I understand that with the main sheeted mid-boom as it does, most are satisfied a vang is unnecessary. Attentive readers will remember that I bought a spinnaker for my M15 that I've never used (I believe it's "asymetrical" -- that is, one side of it is just a bit longer than the other (wait a minute: would the longer side be the leech or the luff for an asymetrical spinnaker?) I'm still turning this whole thing around in my head. Well, I started this note to ask the following question: if my bow pulpit currently is somewhat in the way of the jib when the jib is not close hauled, won't it be even more in the way of a spinnaker? Does anybody else use a spinnaker on an M15 who has a bow pulpit?

I worked in water treatment for 30 yrs. We used Never sieze on bolts that were outside in the weather. Years after putting things together, they just unbolted very easy. Surface rust fell off and the bolts just unscrewed. I put this grease based grafite mixture on all metal/metal surfaces on the boat. Any excess wipes off. You can buy it in most hardware stores. The brand name "Never Seize" is what I use but alternatives are around. Keep a can on the boat. Sandy
