I see how the issue of the leading edge stripe makes a sock desirable. It's been a while since I lived in England, and things have probably changed, but suspect that odd-colored sails would be another instance of that "Marks & Spencer look" that used to make us easy to pick out in any crowd by that certain lack of style. I just looked around on the Sailrite site and didn't see anything that would do what you want (but you had probably already checked there). Remember, always use "Never Sieze" on dissimilar metals in a corrosive environment. Aluminum and SS will corrode the anodic metal (Al) in a wet environment. Sandy

It also looks like it jams the line using the same V-shaped slot that is a PITA on the Laser (chews up the line but is guaranteed to let it go when your back is turned). I made a vang from components, and it certainly didn't cost me any more than $73.30. The block that I used has a cam cleat for the line, which is Much Nicer than that horrid V-slot. Have a look in Boat/West (or is that US Marine) and you should be able to put together exactly what you want. Hi Steve, I put a vang and a bail on my M-15 last year. It should work for a M-17 as well. I think the bail is a Schaefer. I can not find it now - it was about $25. It is a round forged bail, not a strap. A little over kill, but it runs smooth in use. I think it mounts with a 3 inch long, one quarter inch diameter bolt. It must be about 2 3/4 inches wide. I took the bail to my local hardware store and found a standard length stainless bolt that fitted it perfectly. There was exactly enough thread on the outside to take the nut. I bought some cheap Barton blocks from Sailorman.com. My system looks like the top right one on the Dwyer page. I riveted an eye strap on the front of the mast, and tied a loop of line around the mast through the eye. Maybe about a foot of line. The line bears against the mast, and does not pull on any fasteners. I snap on the bottom block to the line and snap the top block to the bail. Quicker to do than to type about it. The bail is installed so the vang makes about a 45 degree angle with the mast. I use the block with the cam on the top. My guess is I used 15 feet of line. I let the line sag down on the cabin top and can easily reach it. That's a little more than the Dwyer set up but you get two snap shackles and a cam cleat instead of a single eye fitting and a vee cleat. It is quick to put on and take down and easy to adjust. I need to get a piece of tubing to go abound the bail bolt, to act as a compression sleeve, but just have not taken it to the metal shop yet. Works for me. Steve R. There's no question that a boom vang is very useful--I would say essential--for good mainsail trim on an M15. The Dwyer kit you link to looks a lot like the one I use. I'm not totally happy with it because I don't think it has suffienct mechanical advantage under some conditions. But it works most of the time. At the risk of betraying myself to the group as a hopeless neophyte (I fear it may already be too late) I make bold to ask: what exactly is a boom bale (or "bail")? Just a question on pop rivets. I too use these fasteners for various things, but I've never used stainless steel. I've seen stainless steel rivets installed using an air-powered rivet gun, but never by hand. Is it possible to install stainless steel using my fairly inexpensive hand tool? Also, I've switched almost entirely to mounting fixtures on mast and boom by tapping and using machine screws. Any reason the bail can't be mounted up using this method? I say this because in monitoring Brian Toss's website, there seems to be overwhelming agreement that the tapped and machine screwed method is superior to rivets. Thanks for the tip, Harvey; it looks like a great book -- but I'm not sure I want to shell out $30 for a book on a subject so specialized, though I'm sure it would help me. On another spinnaker note: has anyone ever tried to make a spinnaker "sock" or douser before? I have an idea how it must work and am thinking of trying to make one. If spinnakers are as hard to handle (even dangerous) as I've heard, the sock would be the *only* way to single-hand one. (I do most of my sailing single-handed). Has anyone ever single-handed a spinnaker on an M-15? Electrical Question

I just read about a Pearson Packet 18' repowered with a 101 lb thrust Minn Kota. The piece gave a table of AMPS to MPH for the motor. I don't understand. Without seeing the chart, can one of our electricians guess whether the author is giving the number of AMPS the Minn Kota has to draw in order to push the Packet at a given speed?
