Hi Tod, My thoughts and feelings on boat show boat visits also. I used to go to Newport, RI and poke about. Some of the layouts are ridiculous. Like a 40 footer with a 5 foot diameter steering wheel. The sail lockers had cutouts so that the wheel would fit. .....but the sail lockers were so short that if the Admirable wanted to stretch out, her legs had to go through the steering wheel..........?????? May be fine for racing, but for normal cruising and enjoyment.......????? As Captain, I don't want legs sticking through my wheel limiting movement if I have to take sudden evasive action. Or when I asked how you get to the engine, on a 38 footer cutter, the eager salesman said, "It's easy....... let me show you." and he then proceeded to unload the port sail locker. First a foot-locker type tray was removed that went on the starboard sail locker: then fenders; lines; sail bags; etc. etc. came out of the cavernous sail locker until the whole cockpit was filled with "stuff". Then he climbed into the sail locker, took out a screwdriver and undid about 6 screws to remove a plywood panel. Then he showed it to me. "See how easy it is to get at the engine......." I just shook my head in disbelief. Can you picture a clogged fuel filter: a sloppy seaway; and then go through this routine to just get to the fuel filter? Either the designer was asleep: the builder was cutting corners and costs; or neither had ever sailed in the real world. But it sure broadens your horizon as to how much junk is out there. Maybe that is the reason why the inexperienced people buy one boat after another: with each one they learn a little bit more about what is really useful and what is not. Such as the 20 footer that sleeps 6......... .......or the dog that won't go to windward. Connie

M-15 Tilt-Trailers?

Does anyone use a tilt-trailer for an M-15 (or M-17)? My M-15 came on a tilt-trailer. The first time I tried to tilt it, I could not force the bow up to make it tilt. I have now learned, that you should slide the boat back and the trailer will tilt by itself. No muscles are needed! I would like to retire my tongue extension and start tilting, but I am seeking the advice of any who may have been down this path before. I understand one concern is the trailer tilting too high and dumping the boat on the transom. I think that can be solved with a length of chain to restrict the angle. A water resistant shock absorber would be even better, if such a beast exists. Then again, maybe it would not need to be water resistant - it should be above the water. BTW we are still sailing in Kentucky. Or more correctly we sail for a while, drift for a while, and repeat. It is an improvement though. We had such light winds during September that we took the mast off one weekend and just played motor boat. Steve R. M-15 #119 Lexington, KY

Hi Dale, I do not know how much TLC is worth, but you may want to check into what other boats go for today. In 2001 my boat was appraised for $3500+ without the trailer. (The surveyor said he was qualified to inspect boats, not trailers.) No lights, no anchor, no boarding ladder, no furling, no head and an ancient 2hp outboard best suited for ground tackle. The owner wanted $3400 and $50 a month for storage until I could pick it up. I thought I got a great deal. Hi Scott, Thanks for a most expert and detailed report on the M15 weights; and all the equipment and it's weights that you carry. Also, your opinions and experience with towing vehicles. As you say, it's a function of terrain / distance / load / speed / and frequency of towing. My comments are towing for 300 miles each way twice a year: total 600 miles. Terrain mostly flat, not climbing the Rockies. But, I have come to another conclusion regarding brakes. Car brakes are designed for "ordinary" use. Hauling an M15 has led me to consider either installing trailer brakes on the trailer; or my latest thought: install bigger and better brakes on the new VW Jetta wagon. This gives me the best of all compromises. Better brakes all year long in the tow vehicle; and more brake capacity when hauling the M15. Now that I've gained this insight, I'm going to do a bit more research in improved car brakes: cost? effectiveness? vs. cost of trailer brakes. Using the automatic transmission in the 1.8T GTI and now in the Jetta wagon (VR6 - 172 HP), I find it is a lot easier launching or retrieving with an automatic than slipping the clutch on a manual. When I brought the wounded M15 home from the lake, I backed the boat and trailer up my slightly sloping driveway to park the boat in it's winter spot. It was very easily done with the automatic, and I had give up trying that with the manual transmission: too much slipping the clutch........ My solution was to simply drive up the driveway with the car in front: pull the car partially into the garage: then unhook the trailer and swing it around and manually man-handle it into it's parked position. It worked, but doing it with an automatic is a lot simpler and faster! Thanks again for a great technical article, and all your detailed component weights. Connie

Hi Jerry, Thanks for the information. Bob Eeg also confirmed my feeling that the Dwyer DM-4 section was the right replacement for the "slightly" bent mast. Now to get on with the replacement: "new and improved"! Connie PS. I'm still looking for appropriate uses for the broken mast. What do you think of using it as a bowsprit for ramming PWCs? ........or is the speed differential all wrong? A Bangalore torpedo perhaps?

I made a removable, tiller extension out of an old wooden crutch. What was the crutch tip is the tiller handle. It is a "V" shaped piece 34 inches long. The original tiller is sandwiched between the open forks of the "V" which overlaps the tiller about 14 inches. The extended tiller is thus about 20 inches longer. I like sitting up by the cabin and being able to reach the tiller. A 10-24 stainless bolt almost three inches long clamps the aft end of the extension to the tiller. A small stainless strap bridges the "V" up near the original tiller handle so the extension doesn't drop below horizontal. This design lets you lift the tiller extension out of the way if you want. I take out the bolt and store the extension when trailering. The tiller is in original shape except for a 3/16" hole. I threw this together before heading for the SCA race in Monterey and was very happy with the overall function.
