Hank, On my M-15, #407, 1988, the battery is a group 24 and is located underneath the V-Berth. Raising the V-berth cushion there is a plywood board covering an access hole to the area below the V-berth. The under berth area is filled with pieces of Styrofoam, except for a battery box that sits just below the opening. The only difficulty in getting the battery in and out is, what to do with the V-berth cushion. Also, how to charge the battery without removing it. For this I am thinking of making a cable the plugs into the cigarette lighter/DC outlet on the electrical switch panel. Idea here is to plug the cable into the outlet with the other end connecting to a charger that is on deck or elsewhere, and trickle charging the battery through the DC outlet. Hi Scott, Misery loves company, so it is nice to learn that I am not alone with my woes! However, as an engineer, now that I have all this lovely extruded aluminum material on hand that is no longer useable as a mast, there must be some other use for it. Any thoughts? What did you do with the "debris"? Just haul it off to the dump? How about cutting it in 1 foot sections for others to use as a template for mast supports when you put the tarp over the mast in winter? (a support in the cockpit is needed to prevent snow load bending of the mast - at least in Connecticut) Having a template makes the building job a lot easier, rather than guessing at the contour. Rich, My mock-up tiller extension fits on top of the existing tiller and runs to about the forward edge of the sail locker lids. I shaped it so that the bottom of the extension fits the curve of the top of the regular tiller. I also tapered the back of the tiller so that the front edge is raised about 3 inches. A pin, that was made to fit the Forespar tiller extension fitting in the tiller, was put in the bottom of the tiller extension. The purpose is to keep the extension from rotating when force is applied. I clamped it in place on the existing tiller,and have sailed with it. So far, I like to new height at the gripping area, and I find that the longer length makes for much more precise steering. By increasing the length of the tiller, a quarter inch movement is now all you need for course holding. All my sailing has been under "pleasant" conditions - no sudden fronts; williwaws; gusts, etc. that would really exercise the system and show weak spots. I find that it's an improvement over the regular length tiller, and don't find that it makes access to the sail lockers any more difficult. The fact that you can now sit all the way forward in the cockpit is also an advantage. Gives you better boat balance. Connie

Hi Wayne. My M15 spents the summer in the water and is stored during the winter. I believe the prior owner kept the boat in during the summer months as well. But the hull was mostly blister free when I bought it three years ago. We were traveling in tandem, and were returning to Lund, British Columbia after a week of cruising in Desolation Sound and environs. I became the 'designated backer' during this trip, and was responsible for maneuvering both our trucks and boats when the going was tight. Anyway, we were trying to outrun an approaching rainstorm, and as such, were in a hurry to stow gear and break down the boat before things got wet. I pulled Bert's boat up the ramp. The ensuing anger further clouded my already tired reasoning, and I decided to back up the road to a clearing out of the way of ramp and tourist traffic. Looking aft through the rear window of his camper shell, I could not see any obstructions. There was, of course, a low slung power line right across the road. All I remember was a sickening thud as the boat lifted itself and then crashed back down to the trailer. I fully expected to find the boat torn to pieces from the force of impact. Thankfully, there was no damage other than a badly kinked mast (and a very badly bruised ego). The little boats are indeed very tough! Bert--gracious as always--made some joke about his new performance mast. I, of course, felt absolutely terrible. We wedged it between some logs in the parking lot in an attempt to straighten it. We were able to get it to the point where it could be stowed in the mast carrier, but it was not pretty. So, upon our return to California (I got to follow the now crooked mast all the way home as a reminder of my stupidity), I bought Bert a new Dwyer m ast/masthead. I cannot remember the exact mast extrusion number, but Bert might be able to remember/dig out the information. I do remember that we had to make some minor modifications to make it all work, but when all was said and done, the boat was as good as new (I can't say the same for my ego). Bummer. Chukar has developed a rather nasty rash of tiny blisters over just the past summer. They concentrate at the water line more or less, run a foot to two along a lapstrake then die out then start again, and range in size from and eight or a quarter inch in diameter (so they do not seem surgically removable like big blisters are...).
