Thanks for the update Rich. I just pulled Chukar out yesterday for the winter. I'll probably mess around with tiller length in the shop over the next few months. It seemed like there would be some interference with the lockers, but I figured I'd be able to live with the inconvenience. Another thing I've recently thought about is a bench that sits across the cockpit. I find I balance the boat by shifting back and forth, and that at times the perfect place to sit is right in the middle, thus an athwart ships bench once could straddle. Connie and Tom: I've had enough sailing experience now with the new 47" length tiller to comment on a limitation. The tiller extends to approximately the center point of the cockpit lockers. Just when you need access to the locker, often times the tiller is in the way. It takes sometime getting used to. Rich

Hi Irv and Tod, Thanks for the commiseration............ I, too am glad it happened at the end of the season, and not at the beginning! Remember, the moral of this story is that if the M15 mast gets in a knock-down-drag-out-fight with the limb of about a 30 inch diameter oak tree, the oak tree limb is the clear winner. The M15 mast is outclassed, and no match for the oak tree. It tried hard, but lost to superior strength. Now, ........... is anyone in need of a new boom? A support for a rose bush? A roost for crows? ....or a home for paper wasps? I have nicely shaped aluminum material which would be very appropriate. Connie

Hello, my folks just bought a Montgomery 17 but have put me in charge of her since they don't know how to sail. We'll sail the Little Duck on a small lake in northern MN. The Little Duck is hull 266 and eventually we're going to fix the electrical, water and head systems so we'll be using this site frequently. My first question? with winter coming on can the boat be stored on the trailer with mast and rigging still up? What are the possible problems of doing this? We do plan on covering her. Percy Priest Lake, southeast of Nashville, and Old Hickory Lake on the Tennessee River are two favorites. New to the group

Hi all. I just wanted to introduce myself as a new member. I am from central North Carolina (Greensboro) and do not have a boat at the moment. I had a Hunter 22 up on Smith Mountain Lake in Virginia for many years. Sold it a few years ago and I am exploring other options now. Pretty much have it narrowed down to either a P-19 or a Montgomery 17 but both are hard to come by in these parts. Anyway, I will just be lurking and learning about the M-boats. Jim

I would NOT store it on the trailer with the stick up. This is done all the time in lake dry storage yards, but when the wind blows, the stress is taken in the hull. It transfers to the hull through the rigging. When a boat is in the water, the boat rocks which takes up much of the energy before it gets to the hull. As others have said, a cover works better with the mast down. Have fun with it; Sandy

Cruising the DTs

Since there has been some discussion recently about cruising to the Dry Tortugas, I thought I would put together an informal cruising guide based on the week-long trip my brother and I took in '99. There are several chart sections showing the route, some photos, and links to relevant sites. I even e-mailed and received directions from The DT ranger station for the correct approach to the anchorages. The cruise is not at all hard to make as long as the weather is normal (so what's new). That's the thing about managing a web site, you can put up any old thing. My own electronic soap box. Thanks for buying the box, folks.
