I have discovered some information that Bob Eeg has taken some people when it comes to selling boats? What is the story the information I read http://www.norsea27.com/faq.htm#just%20the%20faqs%20mamn looks pretty convincing. Who owns Montgomery boats? My only business with Bob was when I bought a new centerboard from him, and I was completely satisfied with the transaction. It was represented in the Montgomery Newsletter that Mr. McCoy had just purchased the rights to sell Montgomerys from Jerry Montgomery. Mr. McCoy required a $ 2,000.00 up front security deposit and a very substantial 2nd payment once the boat was built, prior to delivery. I was put through eight months of misrepresentations and promises. It turned out that Mr. McCoy picked up the M15 molds from Jerry Montgomery after he collected my second payment. This past weekend I had the pleasure of meeting Charless and Marjorie Fawkes, along with their M-15 at Percy Priest Lake in Middle Tennessee. Delightful people. Charless graciously took me out on a short sail in spite of a busy morning schedule, and let me peer into the Monty's every nook and cranny. Thanks again Charless and Marjorie. I hope our paths cross in the future. As to the ship-what a boat! I'd never seen one before in person. She's gorgeous, capable, comfortable, and has an amazing amount of storage for her size. rudders

I am refinishing my m-17 rudder and am wondering if there is a template I can get or make that will define the correct surface curvature. Any Ideas? Ive gotten all the antifouling paint and varnish off. Bare wood just begging to be shaped faired sanded epoxied and on and on. Battery storage

Hello, Does anyone have advice on storing the battery on board the M17. I'm concerned about the build up of hydrogen gas. It isn't much fun removing it after every sail. IIRC, they don't gass when charging. Also, if you could cut a downward angling ventilating slot in the top companionway board, any gas would be vented to the outside. Harvey/ Ga M-17 Stargazer #294

Both are sealed, and will not off-gas unless severely overcharged (they have high pressure relief valves that, under normal use, never open); don't have acid to leak (some models can even be mounted on their sides or upside down); have very low self discharge rates (can be left long periods without charger); are entirely maintenance free (save for proper charging); and are more tolerant to more and deeper discharge cycles. The Gel cells are finicky about charging voltage. Most don't want to see higher than 14.1 volts (and thus a smart or adjustable charger is required). AGM batteries (which I favor) are more tolerant to high voltages, and share similar advantages to the Gel's. Both Gel and AGM batteries are more expensive and slightly heavier than lead acid types for a given group size. With proper regulation and cycling, they should far outlast the lead-acid, however. West Marine (among others) sells a full line of both Gel and AGM type. It is my opinion that the U-1 group size is the perfect battery for the M15, and perhaps a pair of these or a single group 24 would be appropriate for the M17. I stopped installing lead acid batteries some years ago. The Gel cells have improved over the years, and the more recent AGM's have given flawless service in every application I have tried so far (one solar/electric gate, two boats, two trucks, and a diesel generator). I can't see any compelling reason to use lead-acid types any more. Hope this helps, Scott Grometer, M15 #478 "bebe"

Hi Kyle, Boat Philosophy 101: The better you can define what you want to "actually" do with the boat vs, day dreams, the better your final decision will be. Crossing oceans is a day dream for the beginner: he doesn't have the experience or the know-how to accomplish this. With sailing experience, you learn what boat you want; why you want it; what you have to have; and what would be nice to have but is really unnecessary for the job at hand. Then you can cross an ocean. Do you want to sail on inland seas - the Great Lakes? ...on more sheltered waters? ......coastal cruising 20 NM out to sea? Have you considered fog? (New England waters in summer): tidal flows? what kind of mechanical wind? .....for many hours of use against wind and tide, or just to get you in and out of the dock in calm conditions? How many people do you intend to sail with? Two adults and two children (which become adults very soon)? A party of 6 or more? Do you want to live aboard? For how long at a time - days or weeks? What is your intended cruising / sailing area? What are the peculiar conditions of that area - (winds, tides, currents, traffic, harbors, anchorages) - that help define what kind of boat, and the equipment you need. Do you want to keep the boat at a marina or on a mooring during the sailing season? .....or are you going to keep the boat on it's trailer and go off in different directions every weekend. Your thoughts on each of these questions will help shape what you really need as a boat to fulfill your requirements. The better the definition of your requirements, the better will be your choice - and the happier you will be with your choice.
