one! I had one of these for awhile - restored it - actually ran and used it as an auxillary when racing once or twice (not really correct or fair). The thing actually ran BUT after research it is said the motor wouldn't push a canoe! Lame prop, 1/2 HP, it actually wouldn't get out of its own way, kinda like a "clown car" outboard motor, sold it for a HUGE profit to a collector. Still have the decals and reprint owners manual. Try these folks for BS info - when I sold boats I used them - excellent service fair prices and very knowledgeable folk -NFIW their BS manual is SUPERB! They know what they are talking about! You can do a total overhaul of a Seagull engine in the cockpit of your boat with your on-board tools and all you need are a few Whitworth wrenches and 3/8th" Whitworth sockets to do the job. Remember it is a British made engine; so the nuts and bolts used in the engine are made to British Whitworth Standards, and your normal U.S. SAE sockets and wrenches either won't fit on a bolt head or nut because they are too tight, or the next larger size is too loose, and you will round off the corners of the nuts and bolts. Whitworth wrenches and sockets are available at any good automotive tool supplier. Mine were from Snap On Tools, and came to the Seagull via my MG, and two Austin-Healeys. MAC Tool Company probably has them too, and it is possible that even SEARS might have them. As I dimly recall, there is a button on the top of the carburetor float bowl that you have to push down until fuel comes out the top of the cover. This is the first step in the starting procedure, and insures that you have enough fuel in the float bowl to start the engine. Then you close the choke, wind the starter rope around the flywheel; advance the throttle a bit and, ...pull, ....and with some experience, it should start on the second or third pull. When I was in Singapore, all the bum boats that ferry crewmen to and from their anchored freighters were powered by Seagull engines. Since the Singapore harbor anchorage area was very large, these bum boats traveled lots of miles each day. The off-duty crewmen came to town and bought TVs, radios, refrigerators, washing machines, clothes, and whatever else they needed, then loaded it all back in the bum boats and were ferried out to their ship. found this online in another fourm: ""Whitworth" refers to several schemes" "BSW"= British Standard Whitworth. This is a coarse thread equivalent to SAE, but not interchangable because BSW takes a 55 degree thread profile rather thatn the american 60 degree. Used mostly for steel into aluminum and low precison applications like case screws and through bolts. "BSF" =British Standard Fine This is fine thread like SAE fine. Used mostly for steel to steel precision and high strength parts like rod bolts. "BSP" = British Standard Pipe Just like american standard pipe this is a tapered thread, used on bikes mostly for fuel and oil fittings. NB. The size of a Whitworth wrench is the size of the nut or bolt head whch matches that bold or stud size. For instance, a 1/4" Whitworth wrench is NOT 1/4" across the jaws or the hex. Rather, it is the size of NUT that fits on a 1/4" BSW or BSF bolt. This is the same size as the hex head on that same bolt. Ditto for all of the other sizes: A 1/2" Whitworth wrench fits on the head of or on the nut that fits a 1/2" BSW or BSF bold. The same hex sizes are used for tapered fuel fittings where the conical fitting is hald together by a com- pression nut that thightens down on a BSP thread spigot."

Guys, Another Seagull aficionado here - THE most reliable engine for a boat ever made! IMHO Make sure those tools are the proper Kings English wrenches or risk rounded fastener heads. Unfortunately mine are still AWOL. (may have a line on the big one though-fingers crossed) Messy -environmentally incorrect but freakin bombproof. And when they are cleaned up and the exhaust tube is polished, black and gold paint shining in the sunlight- it's like having an XK 120 hanging on your stern. "Torque Rules! tree stump pullin torque. Folks, I think I am going to cry. My baby is going to a new home in Salem, Oregon. I am sure the new owner will introduce himself soon. To Keith, a huge thank you for your dedication to our Montgomery boats, and for making this forum available to all of us. I have treasured the sense of fellowship that this little group has fostered over the years. People like Joe Kidd (who is no longer with us) and so many others have provided so much information about these lovely and capable boats. I am not sure if I will drop out, or just lurk and listen. Electrical connector

Dear M-sailors, I need your help with the following issue. The only outside light my 1982 M-17 has is a tri-colored sailboat light at the top of the mast, which is supposed to be hooked-upto the electrical system via two wires that run through the mast to a connector mounted on the cabin top. The female connector (the one on the cabin top) is still there; it appears to be made of stainless steel, with a stainless steel screw-on cover, and the male connector seems to be also screwing into it. Unfortunately the male connector (attached to the wires coming out of the mast) was lost by the previous owner. Does anyone know where I could get a replacement for this male connector? Who makes them, etc.? This appears to be original on the boat. If this does not work, I need to replace both the male and female plugs. Does anyone have any recommendation for how to remove the existing female plug? It appears to be very solidly glued inside its hole on the cabin top. Recommended replacement plugs? Howard - You did a beautiful job! AND it is a nesting dinghy! WOW! Look forward to seeing more pictures! It is a beautiful boat. To anyone who is considering building a boat - just forget about the money thing - it is completely counter-cost - effective to build one boat. If you can find a friend to build the same model at the same time or near, money can be saved buy buying in 'bulk' and learning from the first build's experience. GO (Thank You Kerry S. -I was the recipient of his strongback,wood, skill, experience and general knowledge of woodworking! I appreciate it every time I use the boat.) In a message dated 3/11/2009 5:23:50 A.M. US Mountain Standard Time, haudsley(a)tranquility.net writes: Buying one would be easier, and if used.....much less expensive.....but sometimes you have to buck those obvious solutions. For you Rider fans, "It's the cowboy way"! Not counting the time it takes to shop for wood, or the time spent sitting in a chair staring at it (watching epoxy set......similar to watching paint dry!) I think a guy could finish one of these out in about 30 days actual work time. It's stitch and glue plywood and you can turn several sheets of 1/4" plywood into a shape that resembles a boat in about 3 days. It takes a few tools, but not that many. Main ones are a good jig saw and good random orbital sander (and a small truckload of sandpaper). The sail rigging (daggerboard, rudder, mast, boom, etc) take as much time to make as the boat does and run the cost up. You could build the rowing tender first and add the sailing gear later. The rig for this design has been optimized for racing, so the rig is a bit complicated (vangs, downhauls, outhauls, travelers, etc). For a sailing tender, something simple like a balanced lug rig might be a better option. I have more pictures. Sometime over the weekend I will try to post them on the montgomeryowners photo site.
