Decided to Buy a Montgomery 15!

Hello All, After much research I've decided to buy a new Montgomery 15! I'm grateful to Doug Kelch for putting me in touch with a Monty 15 owner that not only let me see his boat but took me for a sail! Many thanks to Mike Murphy for being so gracious as to take me out sailing on his Monty 15! That in-person experience was pretty convincing that this little sailboat is capable and seaworthy enough for me stop dreaming about being able to afford another Nimble Kodiak and get a boat I can actually afford to enjoy right now. This is pretty exciting for me after not being able to sail since 2002. This mailing list has been really informative to me and appears to be a great resource for all Monty owners. So far my dealings with Bob Eeg at Montgomery Boats have gone very well in arranging to have my boat built. I'm pleased in that we've come to a purchase agreement that includes some minor customizations with no fuss at all, and that to date Bob has been very responsive to my requests. I'll keep everyone informed as to how things are going and am looking forward to my boat being finished some time in early May - probably delivered to North Carolina by June at the latest. Cabela's has a drift sock they market for fishing boats. We have used one many times on a Lund 16 foot open boat while walleye hunting. It has a circular frame, sock, lanyard, and trip line to spill the water out of the sock. It all packs into a canvas bag. I have no idea how it would work for a M17. Hello Jerry, Welcome to the Montys! You will find that you have definitely got the best of the best with your 23! I used to have a Hunter 31 which I kept at Kinsale. Great Marina. Just hated the drive every weekend. I sold the 31 and now have an M-17 "Pepperjack" which I absolutely love. I live in Fredericksburg and keep my monty in Dahlgren. I have a slip at the Port Kinsale marina waiting for it. Kinsale is two hours from our home and the area looks like a great place to sail. Kinsale is near where the Potomac meets the bay. I didn't know anything about Montgomery boats until I saw Rick Davies M-17 at the Washington Sailing Marina. Pretty boat - It hooked me. I've been following the messages on inflatables vs. towed [hard] dinghies. My wife (Robin) and I are still pondering this. Parachute storm anchors

Hi folks: Hope you are surviving this "beautiful" winter. I'm thinking of buying a parachute-type storm anchor for outings on L. Superior in my M15. Has anyone had experience with one? Getting tangled or "deflated" under use are chief concerns.It seems that there are two leading ones:Para-Tech and Fiorentino, and 6ft. would be the appropriate size for a Montgomery 15.I have been unable to find comparative reviews in searching the literature.Any ideas/info would be much appreciated. parachute anchors

I spoke with the Pardys several years ago at the Oakland boat show. ?Larry suggested a 6 foot parachute anchor for my Flicka, which was three tons excluding gear. ?I would think that it is entirely too large for a Montgomery 15. Bert Felton M 15, Zephyr

M15 Owner's

Greetings All, We've been on this listing previously looking for M17 owner's that might be nearby(Mentone Alabama) who might let us look at their boats. We received many kind responses. With that said, we've decided that we should also take a look at the M15. If there are any owners near us(we're located in the northeastern corner of Alabama, about an hour from Chattanooga TN), we'd like to inquire if they would let us view their M15. And of course, if there are any M15's out there for sale, we're interested. We're retiring this year and want to enjoy sailing again. The M17's are hard to come by, and we can't afford a new one. Plus the M15 will be easier to store, trailer, launch and retrieve. So we feel the M15 would suit our needs better all around. Any comments, suggestions, and owner's willing to let us view their boat will be greatly appreciated.... Sincerely, John and Joy

Connie as usual that was a very informative and excellent post. I have owned two sailboats and two kayaks. While I have done a lot of scrapping, sanding, cleaning, painting, oiling and waxing I have never built a boat. Tick tick tick. If I ever expect to build one I need to start soon. I know I can not top Bob and Jerry and I expect that I can not come close to Howard. Actually I was attempting to have a bit of humor at my wife's expense, as she is the one who asked the question regarding buy vs. build. She has met Howard and a few members of the Havasu local. I have dragged her onto boats from one coast to the other. She always marvels at how nice sailboat people are in general and Montgomery people in particular. Hi Theo, I keep an M-17 at Washington Sailing Marina, just south of National Airport in DC. There are at least a couple of other M-17s on the river, and an M-15 here at the marina.
