San Juan Rendezvous

The San Juan Rendezvous is only 4 weeks away, but it's not too late to sign up if you want to join us for a great time. At last count, we have 8 boats confirmed; 3 M15's, 2 M17's, 2 M23's, and a NonSuch 28. Others will be dropping by for the weekend just to see the boats and get acquainted. Most of us will be launching at Anacortes on June 4th, but latecomers could launch June 5th or 6th and still join us as we head for the islands. The opening weekend we will be day sailing in the Anacortes area, shopping for those last minute items, socializing on the docks, checking out all the M boats, and doing a group dinner in town. Then Sunday we'll head out with the tide for the islands with stops planned during the week at Blakely Island, Spencer Spit, Shaw Island, Friday Harbor, Stuart Island, and then either heading up to the outer islands (Sucia, Matia, Patos), or if the forecast isn't so good, Roche Harbor, English Bay, and Fisherman Bay. Regarding latches, if you weren't going to lock anything (many good arguments not to), what would be wrong with simply drilling a hole in the lid and running a bit of line out through the hole (knotted inside) and down to an appropriately sized clam cleat? Gilbert: I'm going to revise the current reefing arrangement on Sweet Dream. Right now, I've got a cheek block on the port side of the boom (Harkin Bullet). The 5/16" line from the 1st reef clew grommet goes dwn to the cheek block and then to a horn cleat. The proposed revision is to run a 1/4" line from an eye on the s'board side up to the 1st reef grommet, thru the hole and down to the new cheek block then run along the boom to a clam cleat with built-in fairlead located more forward, near the companionway. I'll tie a knot on the end and leave it loose. This way I can reach the clew reef line easily without having to reach way over the side and grab the boom. When i'm heaved -to, to take in a reef, the jib is backed and main is loose. As I pull in on the boom to reach the clew reef line the boat takes off, rounding down til i let the main go again. Quite a balancing act. Moving the cleat forward should help. The double purchase should also help. I believe that Doug has "Seas" rigged like this. I just had the second set of reef points added to the main but haven't rigged then. Steve suggests that the second reef be set up just like the first but on the opposite side of the boom. I'm going to look at this next week. I've also needed the reef recently. Took Sweet Dream on the Dauphin Island race in 18 - 25 knot winds and 3 to 4 ft head seas. One reef was all I needed, I wanted to keep the power up to blow thru the waves. Averaged 5.2 knots most of the trip. Let me know what you decide. Fair winds Don

Hi Clarence, My dinghy is a Bolger NYMPH, and I just put it on a roof rack of my Jetta wagon. I've toyed with the idea of putting the dinghy in the cockpit of the M15, rather than on the roof rack, but it all becomes too cumbersome to be a practical solution. The mast is in the way; how do you cushion it? How do you get it in place and get it out of the cockpit? The roof rack solution is easy - ON; easy - OFF. Connie

Hi Dan, Thanks for your support and interest, but now you have tweaked my interest in sailor's heaven. I have a daughter and her family living in Dallas, so I know everything in Texas is bigger and better........ But Texas as a sailor's heaven? Broad reach out all day and broad reach home again???? How can a New Englander become a Texan? Where do I apply for citizenship, or does having a daughter living there make me a quasi Texan?.............and I get the feeling from your description that you aren't suffering from hoards of PWCs, or Cigarettes disturbing your wildlife...... or the peace and quiet as your M17 gurgles along. You have just defined a new paradise! Thanks for the information; but you certain evoke a bad case of envy. Now where did you say the launching ramp was located? Connie

They have been doing a fine job, and I'm happy with them. Connie They're also rebuildable. New ball bearings are available from the company.
