I want to thank Connie for a very thorough tour if his M15. Nice boat. Nice guy. "Thanks Connie" I was really impressed with amount of storage in Connie's boat. One thiing he did was to cut out the small cockpit locker which got him access to the very big space below and then hung the small (cut out) locker in this now very big locker. So now he has a locker within a locker. With all that storage space I didn't notice where the flotation was located. Is it up in the coamings? After seeing this boat, I'm sold on a Montgomery. The M15 meets alot of my requirements with the exception of very limited sitting headroom and a cockpit just a little too short for me to lay down in. At 6' 180 #s, I'm not big but I worry that the M15 might be like trying to get into my wife's Nissan Sentra where I always hit either my head or my knees because the car is just not built for my size. Is anyone willing to show me thier M17 who lives within 200 miles or so of New York City? I live 60 miles up the Hudson River. It doesn't have to be an extensive tour. I just want to get some spacial reference and see what the overall size difference is compared to the M15. Thanks, Rick Langer

And no tides! I skippered a small (7.5 m) boat in the Archipelago last year. It is a fantastic area in which to sail. Connie is right about the polite behavior of the boaters. Hi Giles, Reminds me of the Thursday afternoon boat traffic jam heading out from Stockholm to the Archipelago and the islands. There is a narrow slot that all traffic bound in one direction has to pass, and the last time I was there, we were sailing a Folkboat - no power, - and tacking our way through the narrows. Meanwhile the power boaters were trying to maneuver around us to get by and pass us, but as we reached the edge of the channel and tacked again, the power boaters would have to stop to let us pass................ Something to see and experience. Bow to stern boats all expertly managed; everyone polite; rules of the road carefully followed.................. Fun! Connie

Ah, Gordon, Those are life's little compromises we have to master. Do I put a 75 HP outboard on an M15 so that I can water ski, and go anywhere anytime at hull speed x 4, or use a 2 HP for when there is no wand at all. Obviously the solution to the problem is a function of your sailing locale, wind and tide conditions, and only you are capable of making that judgement. ~~~~~~~~~~~ Did you see the Public TV show last night on the building of the Golden Gate Bridge? Black and white movie footage of the whole operation from the beginning to the opening of the bridge. A most interesting show. Years ago while on a business trip to Sunnyvale, CA, a colleague arranged a sail for us on a 36 footer. I don't recall our starting point, but we sailed the length of the Bay to Sausalito; tied up for dinner; and then sailed back under a full moon, on a broad reach, with all of San Francisco lit up to honor us. It was one of our most memorable sails. You've got a great playground even if you have too much fog and the wind blows too hard on occasion! Have a great sailing season. Connie M15 #400

Hi: By all means keep the rudder shipped. My 1978 M-17 has a short line attached to the rudder that is used to lift it into raised position then cleat it off. The adjective "manageable" was the best I could come up with, but it wasn't terrible. There's a picture at http://www.angelfire.com/art/2by4/Boats/index.html ("Umiaq" in the left-hand menu) showing us at anchor with that motor. I think it's 62 pounds, and it was great for towing skiers. I absolutely agree on sailing wherever you can -- the older engine was unreliable and the sails sometimes had to go up in a hurry. Unfortunately, with a larger boat (Vancouver 25) power boaters tend to get rather, um... "freaked" when they see a boat under sail in close quarters. Seeing a large fleet of J-24s coming back to the club in (crowded) Spa Creek Annapolis after a race (none of them with engines) is a real pleasure as you see how well it can be done. My dad never had an auxiliary engine in his life, even on the Thames barge, but that was a long time (40+ years) ago. Giles

Not at all, have kept Bellerin in the water since day one and it has not been a problem, just one piece of advise. when bottom paint is applied paint the rudder a little higher than the perceived waterline. As soon as I put her in the water some 11 years ago I realized the rudder was not painted high enough. The added weight of a full gas can pushed her down a bit and part of the rudder was exposed without protection. Has it taken care of the following year.I keep the boat in the water about six months a year and no problems at all, no blisters etc. Gary

Respectfully, I can't imagine using a 5hp motor on an M15. That much weight hanging off the transom has to be murder on boat trim. The 2hp Honda works on our M17 because I use the motor infrequently and selectively. It gets in and out of the slip when the wind is seriously working against me, and it's driven me home a couple times when the breeze drops completely. You have less horsepower to call on, so you plan more carefully. All the time-tested arguments about auxiliary power aside, the more situations you can sail in and out of, the better equipped you'll be when the motor goes south on you when you need it most. Truth be told, a little advanced planning will neutralize at least 50% of those situations where a bunch of mechanical muscle is needed. There. On the other hand, it was manageable and the main issue was lifting it on and off the mount during launch/recovery. The 2HP is a very different motor. Smaller, lighter and simpler. It's also noisier and vibrates more. I have one as a dinghy motor, and don't like it nearly as much as the 5HP -- but am not sure that I'd expect to actually _like_ a dinghy motor. I would not use it on an M-17 because it just doesn't seem powerful enough. These opinions are based on first hand knowledge of the M-15 (not the 17) and are worth almost as much as they cost! Hi Gordon, You very neatly show that the motor has to match the conditions! A 2 HP Honda won't hack it against a strong ebb tide, and maybe a 6 HP won't either............! That's where low powered vessels learn to "sail with the tide". Connie
