My wife may be able to help. She's a graphics designer for a sign company, and she has connections with a business that silk screens tee-shirts. She'd need a drawing to work with, preferably a jpeg or bitmap file. If nothing else, you could use the lines drawings of the boats. Now I have ANOTHER reason to wish I owned a Montgomery! Underslung Rudder

Hello This is getting to the time of year that I really look forward to reading the mailing list messages. I have an older M-17 #305, which came with a long blade-type rudder. After a couple of years taking off and putting on the rudder or raising and lowering it too frequently, I built a shorter underhung rudder. The goal was to create a rudder that I wouldn't have to remove when trailering or raise or lower when coming into shore or shallow water. In order to get enough rudder area with a shallower rudder I built the rudder wider (sticking further out the back of the boat) than the original, kind of like a cat-boat. The rudder extends down into the water about 2-3" less than the bottom of the keel. That way the first thing to hit is the keel not the relatively fragile rudder. But, with the added width I didn't want too much resistance when turning the rudder, so I balanced the rudder by extending the ruder forward of the rotation axis under the skeg of the boat. Not a problem since I don't ever have to take the rudder off or raise it anymore. The new rudder is about 14" wide down to the skeg, and then sticks forward under the skeg about 8". This provides an easy turning rudder with good balance. This really helped the weather helm, and the boat sails itself much of the time. I haven't even thought about any rudder hassles since. Thanks for interest in tee shirts! Over the past several years, for the San Francisco Half Marathon I've worn a Hogin Sails tee shirt which features a simple line drawing of a Drascombe lugger. The tee shirts come in all different colors. I loved wearing them but often thought it would be really neat to wear a Montgomery tee shirt. Qualifying for and being invited to run in the Boston Marathon at age 63 is something I just couldn't turn down. I may never have the opportunity to run in this great event again. Built in a snap together sailing galley on to the lowest hatch board so I can get a cup of coffee on the sail, it has a built in pot holder so it does not spill except in the roughest weather. Bought the spray foam to seal between the aft berth and the galley cross section to prevent water from moving forward. I'm in process of installing a Vee shaped water tank from the potties potter forward, its a 47 gallon size and will be air filled to twenty pounds, calculating at 62.4 lbs of buoyancy per cu ft and a dead a weight of 1500 lbs. I will need to install 24 cu ft of space to stabilize so any emergency can be confidently dealt with, if no assistance is near by. You know that old saying about its hard to remember that your are draining the swamp when your ass is knee deep in alligators. The time to plan is before any problem or emergency arises. I now have two pumps with back presenter flapper valves to prevent back up thru a single stern 1-1/2 out let, one electric and one hand. I bought a small Guzzle from US Boat but it is too hard to operate after ten minutes or so, so I'm looking for an "easier on the arm" model. The next projects include installing a cockpit inspection hatch, and two cross section inflatable buoyancy bags either in the combings or under the stern cockpit flooring. The rigging is one project It does need to be replaced and I like the idea concept of Norseman Swageless because they claim they can be re-used. The wind vane is the old standard trim-tab design and its still in its infancy. It attaches to the rudder and steers directly with-in 5 or so degrees. I found it much quicker to set and forget or set change sails and reset with just a one locking pin so much faster than the surgical tubing to sail method. Montgomery Tee Shirts Thread History

Rich Cottrell started the thread, asking if such a tee existed, because he wants to wear one in the Boston Marathon this year. I suggested, tongue-in-cheek, to Bob that he should offer to create one since Rich had offered free advertising, and implied that Bob could probably sell a bunch of 'em. But I was also genuinely interested. I asked the question of the List, still unanswered, whether anyone out there had the graphics-design skill to come up with a potential logo and graphics. The concept seems to be snowballing from there. You are correct Tod, our rudders differ. The leading edge of my rudder (and Larry Yake's too, but the way, and probably others of our vintage up to maybe late '76) drops straight down the transom, like yours, but rather than continuing to drop straight, at just below the waterline it angles 90 degrees forward and extends 4 or 5 inches under the skeg (so the rudder looks like an "L"). The width (fore/aft) of the rudder above the waterline is 7 or 8 inches, but it widens to approximately 12 or a bit more the remaining 30 inches or so to the bottom. Probably clear as mud. The original idea as Jerry has explained it to me was to help balance the helm. I'm sure it made fabricating the rudder more complicated too. Anyway, I think he went to the straight rudder after the mid-70s boats and never looked back...
