M-17 in Nanaimo

Hi, My other boat, a Prout Quest 33 catamaran, is currently berthed in Campbell River, B.C. I was on my way there with her recently when I spotted a 17 in Nanaimo. She, the Monty, had a 2003 CA registration, CF 3612 GC. Is one of you listers her Skipper? I've also used handhelds (Garmin, Lowrance & Megellan) in my private planes and boats. Screen size and being able to read the screen in bright sun (low wing bubble canopy) was an issue to me flying and the Lowrance brand did that way better than any others. It has options for large text/numbers and adjustable contrast. The downside is it eats batteries when setup for best reading. A personal preference to me is the touchpad on bottom instead of on top like Garmins are. It just fits my hands better and lets the screen be in line of sight on front of dash installations. I move it from plane to 3 different boats. On a 20' pontoon boat I use a recessed cup holder to hold the unit and the screen is easy to see. Garmin's have a better data base setup and are easier to page though and access saved waypoints. The Lowrance requires more steps to access the database. It isn't nearly as friendly as a Garmin 12s or other Garmins. Reliability isn't an issue with either but Lowrance probably takes the quality lead. They were the first to use 12 parallel channels too...Garmin's and others followed. My early handheld Lorance will work while sitting in my house. It receives though a drywall ceiling and plywood roof with shingles and only takes a minute or less to lock on the satellites. I tried a Garmin 12 and it wouldn't lock on unless outdoors or close to a window. Either brand is good to go with but Garmin has more to chose from, more accessories and lower prices. Also, on any handheld gps with the tiny display screen it is almost impossible to read maps without the data being very busy and cluttered. Maybe if you're 25 yrs old with perfect eyes that won't be a problem but small maps aren't practical to me. I typically use the "go to" function and put the screen up that plots my tract while showing reference waypoints and navigation. It lets you in zoom in and out and see departure and destination without clutter. For a small boat I wouldn't get bogged down with a large fancy gps unit. For a big boat it would be different. am looking at handhelds w/ maybe the option of a gps that has capability to download coastal charts must be portable and user friendly w/ hopefully chart cpability or if not that then the cheapest most basic model[say a geko 201]

MC, I haven't a clue..........! As I said, my aim is to keep the water on the outside. I am not the least bit interested in having the interior filled with water and then depend on my Styrofoam logs to stay afloat. Keep the cork in the bottle: and the water on the outside of the bottle, and the bottle will keep floating! Yes, the Styrofoam will do a bit of crumbling, so if you want a clean boat, get rid of the Styrofoam! Connie

I recall this being discussed at one time by Rich Cottrell and Seth M. I've thought about replacing the wire-to-rope halyard on our M15 with low stretch line. Inspecting the masthead sheaves, (which are sized for 1/4 line and not grooved for wire) I see the wire has been chaffing the leading edge of the masthead fixture/rivet, but no damage is evident on the wire halyard itself (no meathooks or shiny wear). In my search for a delrin replacement, (approx. 1.5" dia, 3/8" thick, with a 1/4" clevis pin and sized for an as yet undeterimed halyard size...) I'm batting zilch. Styrofoam in V berth storage

Since it's raining and I can't go sailing :-(, I've been crawling around m15 #385 in the garage, looking things over, and found that the storage compartment under the V berth is screwed down and filled to the brim with blocks of Styrofoam. I understand that this is meant to give buoyancy in an emergency, but...I would like to use that space and I'm thinking of getting rid of the foam in favor of putting something heavy up there, like a few gallons of water and maybe a spare anchor. Seems to me that anything I can do to counteract my 200 lbs plus outboard plus other gear aft will keep her on her lines better and improve sailing qualities. I was wondering what other M15 owners have done with this space? Is dumping the foam a good idea or am I going to be all wet? Thanks, George M15 #385 (still unnamed)

Hi Todd, I own a M17 and have sailed with several Potter 19's, so I thought I'd give you my 2 cents worth. The Potter is a fine family boat, with more room in the cabin, somewhat of a galley, and they're beachable and very stable and level sailing. The people I've sailed with all seem to love them. They do, however, have their drawbacks. They are much slower than the Monty, and tricky to dock and load with the daggerboard up because they just skitter sideways and won't steer. The M17 is a great sailer. Very fast for her size, more solidly built, and great handling even in rough conditions. Little or no weatherhelm and an adequate cabin. (Pretty tight for 4, though.) Any money you put into one is well spent. They hold their value well and when it comes time to sell, no problem. There's always people looking for them. You won't find a classier looking small cruiser either, in my opinion. I'm always getting compliments on her. They are somewhat noisy to sleep in if there's any wave action. The lapstrake causes a splish-splash that seems to amplify in the cabin. So, as always, it's a matter of what your priorities are.
