Clarence, I have yet to install the furler due to really cold weather. I have to have a new forestay for several reasons: The forestay for the furler demands toggles on both ends. The existing forestay is attached to the masthead with a swaged loop. It is attached to the toggle on the bow also with a swaged loop on a toggle. The existing turnbuckle, tubular body with a knurled locking nut, is not compatible with with the furler system. The system demands an open turnbuckle with cotter pins, the forestay swaged into the upper screw end of the turnbuckle. The lower screw end with T-bolt and toggle. The swaged end is passed through the middle of the luff. The outer slots of the luff hold the sail luff and the halyard. This is the best I can do at this time and suggest that that you phone CDI (978 371-5508) and ask them to mail you the installation insructions, which I did.They were very accomodating and I received instructions in three days. There website is: www.sailcdi.com. Hope this is of some help. Incidentally, my M17 is 28 years old and consequently the rigging. I'm sure there are changes on the newer boats.

Newbie question on sheaves and such

Sorry for such a basic question but my new Monty is parked and waiting for the 22 inches of snow to melt. So here goes.... what is a "sheave"? what does it look like? and where is it located? Mike, I just purchased the CDI FF2 flexible furler for my M-17. I haven't installed it yet since it requires a new forestay, at least for my model. It has been strongly recommended to me by three other M-17 owners. If you so decide, the best price that I found is offered by the sail Warehouse. I bought it elsewhere before I learned of Sail Warehouse, who's catalog I received just yesterday. www.thesailwarehouse.com 831 646-5346. Don't be spooked by the luft uncoiling process. I uncoiled it easily by myself and it straightened itself out in a few days on my cold baement floor. Bill K

MC That was for an M15, not an M17. The Dwyer extrusion was almost, but not quite the same shape as the original mast profile. Connie

New to the list - greetings!

Hi there, I'm new to the list and thought I'd take the advice from the initial email from the server and introduce myself. I live in Dubuque, Iowa and currently sail a Sanibel 17 on the Mississippi River (we also tow it to lakes). We've only owned the boat (and sailed) for a couple of years and have really enjoyed it. I got the boat cheap and it needed a lot of work which I'm slowly doing. I've redone the electrical, removed and reinstalled the chainplates, used Poliglow on the hull, built a new tiller, reinforced the mast support in the cabin, and replaced some of the cam cleats and other hardware and rigging. My project before this season is to try to repair some small blisters that (I think) are causing slow leaking of water into the hull when we keep the boat slipped on the Mississippi. Needless to say, I'm not looking forward to that. Since we've decided that we like sailing so much, I'm also keeping my eye open for the 'perfect' boat for us (as a possible option rather than putting lots and lots of time into work on our Sanibel). I had considered a Potter 19, but am nervous about the daggerboard and our wingdams on the Mississippi. Also, with the current on the Mississippi, I'm thinking the M17 might sail a little faster than the P19 and our Sanibel. We also want to keep the boat small and safely trailerable behind a minivan. Finally, there are four of us - me, my wife, a 5-year old, and a 2-year old and we'd like to be able to camp occasionally on the boat. I really like the idea of a shoal keel and a lighter centerboard (which the Sanibel also uses) rather than a heavy swinging keel. I've never seen a Montgomery 17 in person, but it seems like it might be an ideal boat for us. So, in general I subscribed to learn more about the Montgomeries, get an idea if the four of us could sleep in the 17 (we're campers and canoers so are comfortable with the 'hardshell' tent idea), and watch for the perfect boat (3 sails, ladder, bimini, lifelines, bottom paint, etc.) since we're now willing to spend more money on a boat. Hi Tom, My new mast came from Dwyer Masts in North Branford, CT. They are on the Internet and you can look up mast profiles and all their mast accessories: sheaves, cleats, etc. I just increased the distance between the clevis pin holes so that the forward and aft edges of the sheaves led the halyard clear of the mast and the top fitting. Works great. You can probably do the same by just re drilling the clevis pin holes a bit more than one diameter outboard of the existing hole. That should do the trick and lead the halyard fair on both sides of the mast. Of course you will have two sets of holes in the top fitting which I avoided by having my friends weld the old holes shut before drilling the new ones. Connie

They're fine Jerry--matter of fact, we replaced them when Jane and I came down to sacatomatoes for the race in Oakland in 2000. But they are definately too small. The wire is chafing a groove in the head of the rivet that holds the masthead truck in place. I'm thinking the problem was a case of Bud in the first place... Snatch blocks

I just received the West 2004 Marine catalog. I noticed a small dinghy snatch block on page 1023. I have been keeping an eye out for a small, reasonably priced snatch block for fooling around with sheet to tiller steering and for adjusting the slot between the jib and the main (barber haulers). This catalog item isn't clear how to attach it to a line. Has anyone else seen a small snatch block in this price range? My CD 25 would point much higher with the working jib and a reefed main if I used barber haulers to decrease the slot between the main and jib. This may work on any masthead rig like the M17. You know what Connie, I was just yesterday thinking that what you suggest regarding the position of the sheaves appeared to be the problem. Because the sheaves are positioned too close together in the masthead casting, the halyard fouls and chafes on the forward side of the mast (it leads better to the mainsail head board off the aft side, but it still isn't sufficient). Seems like a design flaw because I don't think the problem can be corrected any way other than the action you took. Did moving the holes create any clearance problems? I'm sure you thought of this, but could you have achieved the desired result with a larger dia. sheave? By the way, can you supply the specs and/or supplier of your new mast? On my old mast, the wire halyard had been rubbing on the forward side, because the sheave wasn't located properly. Since I used the old mast top fitting on the new mast, my first job was to relocate the sheaves. Luckily, I have an aircraft parts shop I work with, so they welded the old holes closed, and then I drilled new holes for the sheaves that were further apart; i.e., the halyard now was completely clear of the top edge of the mast on both the forward and aft sides. No more chafe! At the same time I converted the main halyard to an all rope halyard.
