Peter, I use a real low tech tiller lock on my M15. Uses a jam cleat on the bottom of the tiller to capture a line connected to two bungee loops that connect to the stern cleats on either side. Works real well. M15 Jib, Main and Tiller Lock

Thank you, Tom S, Steve R, Bill R, Randy G. I think that on my boat I will start with the tiller lock because I have been there with a 20 MPH wind blowing and trying to set the sails with the tiller loose! The rudder will go the wrong way! Hi Peter, I stand in the hatch opening or maybe sit on the side of the cabin top. I installed Clam Cleats above the horn cleat, and moved the horn cleats a little lower. I think they are the side entry cleats: CL 217 Mk 1 (Starboard) & CL 218 Mk1 (Port). I can use one hand to feed the bolt rope in the slot and use the other to "ratchet" the halyard as I raise the main. I use the horn cleat as a turning block, then secure the halyard to the horn cleat. I do not trust a clam cleat to tie off the halyards. Hi Peter, I use a Forespar Tiller Extension (with a box in the cockpit side to hold the knob). With the tiller locked and the Honda at idle I can keep the bow in the wind long enough for me to go to the mast and raise the main. I sail most of the time by myself. Some sort of tiller holding device is your first priority, because there is no way you can hold the tiller and raise the main at the same time. So head into the wind: lock the tiller in that position; and you will have ample time to raise the main before you start to fall off. I raise the jib from the cockpit. Connie M15 #400

Either way they can be financially impractical. I thought, very briefly, about one for an anchor light (and longer about one for the house), but then started looking for something cheaper and battery-powered that could be hoisted aloft. I finally found a flashlight which, by pulling down the housing, becomes an unblocked-by-handles-and-other-crap all-around light, but haven't timed battery life or tried hoisting it (hard to do with the mast down in the garage. :-)) From a strictly legal standpoint, probably neither meets the mandated standard for visibility (2 miles?), but unless I anchor in the middle of the river or the Chesapeake, it probably doesn't matter for practical purposes. Hi Rusty, Anker is German for anchor. What you are looking for is an anchor light. My guess is that they are of German manufacture, because they label their lights: "Anker, Backbord, Steuerbord, Heck (stern light)" In my DEFENDER catalog, pages 117 to 122, you will find a large listing of navigation lights. What you may be looking for is the "Den Haan Anchor Light" - comes in three different sizes and all are kerosene lamps. GUEST - page 117 also has electric automatic turn on - turn off anchor lights to hang from a jib halyard, or a mast head fixture that offers you a 360 degree strobe light or an anchor light. Connie

Hi Craig, The latest issue of MAIB has a fascinating article written in 1847 about building an aid to navigation on the York reef in Maine. When you read it you just have to marvel at man's stamina and will power. The workers had to row 5 miles to the reef, and if they were lucky got to work an hour before they had to leave again., with waves washing over them most of the time. Can you imagine putting in a foundation on solid rock under those conditions? .........and they tried working into November..........!!!! The article covers the hazard to navigation presented by the reef, and how the tower was built. Well worth the price of admission to read such articles. Connie
