Hi Tom, When I had to rebuilt my new mast last year, I used the old mast top fitting with the two sheaves. On my old mast, the wire halyard had been rubbing on the forward side, because the sheave wasn't located properly. Since I used the old mast top fitting on the new mast, my first job was to relocate the sheaves. Luckily, I have an aircraft parts shop I work with, so they welded the old holes closed, and then I drilled new holes for the sheaves that were further apart; i.e., the halyard now was completely clear of the top edge of the mast on both the forward and aft sides. No more chafe! At the same time I converted the main halyard to an all rope halyard. Connie

San Juan Rendezvous

OK folks, the dates are set for the first Montgomery San Juan Rendezvous. We'll be launching on Friday, June 4th, at Annacortes, Wash., and start with a fun weekend rally based out of the Cap Sante Boat Haven, with day trips, checking out each others boats, bumming rides, probably some casual racing (anytime there's two boats, it's a race, right?), visiting and maybe music on the docks, and a group dinner at the Seafood Buffet. Cap Sante is a public marina, so it would be a great time for you "list lurkers" to come out and see the boats in person. The whole spectrum of Montys will be there; 15's, 17's, and both an older and a brand new 23! Try to find that group together anywhere else! Then on Sunday, those who can stay will head across into the islands for a week long tour, with some nights spent at anchor in sheltered bays, and some at the various marinas in the islands. (Meaning you don't have to go all week without a shower or restocking your cooler.) So far, we have a list of 7 confirmed boats, and 8 hopefuls, and I expect that number to grow substantially soon. If you are interested in joining us, you can contact me off-list at leyake(a)juno.com , and I'll send you reservation info. MC With the single side stays (shrouds) an M15 mast is easy to raise. I attach a short cord to the bow cleat with an eye in the outer end. To this I connect the jib halyard. I stand in the cockpit and slide the mast to the rear until it engages in the jaws of the bracket on the cabin roof. Then I walk forward raising the mast until the shrouds are tight. I hold the mast up with one hand and tighten the jib halyard, cleating it at the mast. This holds the mast up while I walk forward to connect to forestay. While on the bow, I hank the jib in place. Ive heard of some using the topping lift line to temporarily hold the mast up but most use the jib halyard. You have to make sure that the shrouds dont tangle anything as you lift the mast. This works so well, that even with two folks rigging the boat, I still do it this way. Outlook express has a neat little utility that allows you to set message filtering tools. Here is what I did: From the Tools|Message Rules|Mail window, You can add a rule by clicking on the new button. 1. In the select the conditions for your rule : check "Where the subject lines contains specific words" 2. Select the actions for your rule "Move it to the specified folder" 3. Rule description "Apply this rule after the message arrives 4.Name of the rule "New mail rule #X" (next available number) When you click OK, this box goes away and the underlying Message Rules window will appear. In the Rule description dialog box this rule is waiting to be finished. Click on the blue contains a new window will promt you for Specific Words. I found , for some reason that cut and paste from an actual subject part works better than just typing in the "Re: M_Boats:" line. That should be all you need in the rule. The next part of the rule will move the message to a specific folder. I created a sail folder earlier just for this.The rule should look like this "where the subject line contains Re:M_Boats: move the message to the Sail folder". Peter I use a home-made tiller tamer on Sweet Dream. I screwed a small plastic jam cleat (a plastic wedge from a bar that holds drawings to a file) to the underside of the tiller. A single bungie stretches from one side of the cockpit to the other. One end of the bungie goes through a pad eye to a block of wood that acts as a tension adjuster. I pull the bungie out and snap it under the tiller when I want to lock the tiller down. In fact, I usually sail with the tamer engaged and the bungie tension loose. That way I can let go for a while to do something anytime. The tamer also hold the rudder straight out when docking and launching so it doesn't bang around. I also added a 20" tiller extension to let me move my weight forward. As Bill said, the M15 is very sensitive to weight distribution but I can point her into the wind and go forward to raise and lower sails, even in a blow. The tiller tamer also helps to hold the helm alee when lying heaved-to. With the tiller locked and the Honda at idle I can keep the bow in the wind long enough for me to go to the mast and raise the main. I sail most of the time by myself. Some sort of tiller holding device is your first priority, because there is no way you can hold the tiller and raise the main at the same time. So head into the wind: lock the tiller in that position; and you will have ample time to raise the main before you start to fall off. I raise the jib from the cockpit. Like Connie, I use the Forespar extension with tiller lock box. There are advantages to the extension and lock box, but there is also value in having some stretch in the system. The M15 is very sensitive to weight distribution. In light to moderate, steady conditions, I can lock the tiller, stand in the companionway and lean to port or starboard to make small course adjustments. Keep that in mind because whatever you use to hold the rudder, short of an autopilot or wind vane, you will need to keep an eye on where she's headed and be ready to respond. I use a similar setup on our Potter. I just hook a heavy bungy to the stern cleats, and activate with a jam cleat. Works great! For an even a lower tech solution for short term tiller locking, I stretch a single piece of bungee cord between the stern cleats.
