Repairing gelcoat on the bow

Clarence, Thanks for repair instructions. I didn't have any idea how I was going to attack that problem. I should be able to get it done before spring thaw. One question though, if I don't manage to get it fixed right away, will it hurt to it sailing with a hunk of gelcoat missing? Fairwinds John

Boats purchased from Bob

Bob, A boat order was made. A purchase price was negotiated and agreed upon. I don't think anybody is going to believe a business man is building and giving away his boats. The boat is beautiful, but I didn't get everything we agreed on and I paid for. In spite of how you are trying to make it sound, I paid a hefty price for a new M-17. I paid the price for a new M-17 so I would have a guarantee that the boat would be in perfect shape and I wouldn't have to start replacing things or fixing things. What I've learned is, buying from you is like buying used, just more expensive. I searched for two years before deciding on a M-17. I don't think I made a mistake. I love the M-17, but, I want the items that are supposed to come with the boat, but didn't. I want reimbursed for the things I paid to have installed but weren't installed. On 9-18, when I brought the problems to your attention, you assured me that you would take care of my concerns. Since that time, when I DID HAPPEN TO GET YOU ON THE PHONE, I got " I sent the stuff. You will be getting it soon." " Didn't you get it? I'll look up the tracking number and call you back." " You should be getting it. I'll check on it.". But now we know the truth, you didn't send it, and you have no intention of doing so. The mainsail, I did get. It came straight from the sailmaker. That was a mistake that was corrected, by the SAILMAKER, and I'm grateful for that. As far as the other items; I'm not going to let any of them deter me from enjoying the boat. We had two agreements, 1) the boat as ordered and the price as negotiated, and 2 ) the replacement of missing parts and the reimbursement of things not installed. I kept up my end of the agreement. It had the wrong mainsail, no jib sheets, the rudder wasn't varnished or sealed, the CDI roller/furler wasn't installed and a partial list of parts, for the CDI, was in a box in the cabin, no reefing gear. I had ordered the lines run aft, but no parts were installed for lines run aft. On top of all this, the boat was not secured properly during delivery and the bow has a hunk of gelcoat, the size of a nickel, broken out, down to the fiberglass. None of this would be a problem if Bob would take care of the missing and broken problems, but, to this date Bob hasn't come through. He doesn't answer e-mails. He won't answer the phone when he knows it's me, and when I call on a different phone and he answers, he gives me a quick excuse and hangs up. If I had it to do over again I would buy used. adivtives to paint

just suggested from neighbor who builds very lightweight plywood river boats, an additive to consider is to add flake copper to the paint NOT for anti-fouling but to get a tough surface, he has no proof but says has been doing it for years to help the against the occasional bumps from logs and sandy beaches.

have yet to find a paint contractor that has spray painted anti-fouling paint, is it because the toxic levels of the paint or perhaps the thickness of the paint.????

No, since I asked for experience information on this painting I have discover two main problems with spraying, one the toxic nature of the paint, but my search came up with it being the toughest surface I could put on at home workshop. but secondly that to use it there is a whole range of spray guns that will put an equal amount of paint in the air than on the boat. which means twice as much paint and that stuff is expensive. For the underwater anti-bottom I plan to use the Ultima SR, so far this has been the best paint I have ever used, on a trailer boat that is. ----- Original Message ----- From: Mark Escovedo To: MC Carpenter Sent: Sunday, December 19, 2004 12:44 AM Subject: Barrier Coat Hey MC, Your paint contractor needs to learn a little more about the difference between epoxy and plan old polyester resins. The epoxy is a good idea it will seal the old resin which is not really impervious to moisture. This is most important below the waterline. As for the freeboard, the two part primer that Interlux provides as part of their system would be what I would use. Also I have to repeat the warning Mr. Andrews mentioned, Use a positive airflow supply mask and suit. THIS STUFF CAN KILL when sprayed. You may want to consider rolling the stuff on. Will you be painting with LP below the waterline as well? Interlux does not recommend continuous immersion of their LP paint for more than 72 hours. toxic paints

you know I looked into the toughest paint I could get and still have that perfect waxed, the wet look on these race boats, I did not check into the toxic problems, I am now looking into high gloss enamel instead , hope that is a little saver to handle. One other problem that came up today was the fact that some paint machines look like they are doing a great job but only 50% actual goes on the to be painted surface. the rest is blown away.,

Hi Chris, What your question boils down to really is, what is the level of your sailing experience? ............. your ability to do smaller or larger repairs? I had gone through two trailerable boats - a Bolger MICRO and a ComPac 16 recognizing the shortcomings of both and looking for an alternative that solve the shortcomings. The M15 was the perfect solution. I also have extensive experience at boat work; having built several stitch and glue boats; and had experience sailing our old 29 footer and a 38 footer for a total of 27 years. In other words, I knew exactly what I wanted; why I wanted it; and when I found the M15 website and got answers to my numberous questions, my decision was easy. An M15 was exactly what I was looking for; and I bought mine sight-unseen. I was not in the least disappointed with the boat, it's build quality, and the way it sails. I'm a happy M15 sailor. There are four people interested in the Key West cruise, but there is also a cruise planned for Pennsacola. The annual B.E.E.R. (Backwater Environmental Escape Rendezvous) cruise is set for May 20 - 24. They are a group of southern trailer sailors who have an annual cruise, which is open to anyone to attend. Hi Jerry I converted from the original M15 fixed motor mount to a lift mount. My recommendation: Do it because it makes life simpler and keeps the prop out of the water. Connie M15 #400
