Your talking about two boats that probably couldn't be more different Gilbert. I haven't sailed a Typhoon, but a woman at our marina has one. It's a heavy boat with a full keel and tiny cabin. It's styling doesn't do much for me but it's got some overhang bow and stern that some might like. It looks like a wet ride. You'd have to have a special place in your heart for Carl Alberg to take a Typhoon over an M17 in my opinion, although I've heard very good things about the Cape Dory 25D... My wife and I spent almost two years cruising in the Bahamas on a 28' ketch without refrigeration...believe me, it isn't a big deal once you get over the mental block of doing it. Ever since then I drink warm soda pop and don't even think about it. Bill P.

RE: Lifting an M-15

I noticed a string on raising an M17 by the toe rail. My Yacht club has a jib crane for lifting boats up to 2 tons into and out of the water. I've played with several arrangements for lifting an M15 on a pacific trailer. I found that the balance point (center of gravity) is 8" aft of the shroud attachment points. I can run a 2" wide strap from a point just in front of the keel to the center of gravity and miss the trailer bunks. Most of the boat weight will on the strap. I run two lines from the hoist hook aft to the cockpit cleats and run a safety line to the forward cleat. The hoist just misses the mast and shrouds by a foot. I plan on adding two 5/16" u-bolts down through the rub rail on either side just forward of the cockpit cleats for extra support. The hull-to-deck joint seems to be very rigid at this point. The local sail shop is building the strap for me. I've tried this arrangement using poly rope and it seems to be very stable. When I get it rigged this spring, I'll let you guys know how it works. I didn't realize how much the centerboard trunk protruded into the footwell, so the box idea is out. Instead, a 1xDepthOfYourButt board spanning the footwell from side berth to side berth and a Sport-a-Seat type seat sitting atop it. Chosen appropriately, the 1x board could also span the cockpit seats and possibly serve other functions, thus meeting the "multi-use" requirement. The Sport-a-Seat could be used for only one thing that I can think of, but it could be used in several different places. Perhaps the rule interpreters would make a ruling on whether that meets the multi-use rule? The other is: CRC 5-56 CRC Chemicals USA Warminster, PA 18974 The CRC products are available at automobile parts and supply stores: also you will find it in Welding Supply shops. Both products have done good jobs for me, and I don;t prefer one over the other. Usually it's a case of which spray can is within reach? Garage or downstairs in my shop. After you have soaked them for a few days, try warming the studs with a small propane torch. Heat does a good job of breaking down rust. Just be careful that you do it outside,; and have a fire extinguisher handy if things start burning (the oil in the solvents). Another old trick is to take a larger size pin punch and about a 2 lb hand sledge hammer. Put the pin punch on a corner of the hex of the wheel nut, then try hitting it with the 2 lb sledge. Short sharp blows will (hopefully) loosen the nut. What you are trying to do is position the punch so that you apply tangential force to the nut (trying to rotate the nut). The combination of soaking in a rust solvent; applying heat to the stud; and applying force with the hammer should do the trick.......... Next time put some water pump grease on the stud threads before you put the trailer in water! Last time the straps left a sad mark on the upper hull that now needs to be gel coat repaired. One of those quick hoist that they use for engines blocks would be great way to do it. (M 17). It not only allows you to sit athwartships, but can be moved aft and become a cockpit table. Bob put formica on the up surface and rails to keep the plates on. Get Bob to show you a picture of the "bridge deck" board that we designed for GO! (M 17). It not only allows you to sit athwartships, but can be moved aft and become a cockpit table. Bob put formica on the up surface and rails to keep the plates on. When varnished it is going to look quite nice. It will stow below easily when not in use. Cheers. Skip

Soak the studs with liquid wrench or other penetrant. Upon soaking, tap on the metal bits with a hammer to set up a vibration, said to help the fluid penetrate. 2. You can try heat, as in a portable propane torch. Heat the stud to cherry red. I generally skip this though, and go directly to step three. 3. Make an impressively long cheater with a wrench and a pipe 5-10 feet long. This will provide a spectacular amount of coercion to the recalcitrant stud.
