My limited experience with the Cape Dory is that it was very pretty for its time. One either likes the lines with the classic overhangs and sheer--or not. For the sailing part, it points pretty well with the right headsail, but is somewhat slow to the weathermark and slightly wet with its fine bow and narrow lines. It is also a bit tender. The cockpit is modestly comfortable, and the interior accomodations are just about right to stow a couple of headsails only. The Montgomery, on the other hand, .......................................! I totally agree with everything that everyone else has said about the M 17. I have no experience with the 15. As proof of the pudding, we just bought our second M 17 to sail the cold, foggy waters off the coast of Maine because we wanted the smallest, most comfortable boat that we could find that looked good and was safe and FUN to sail in all kinds of weather. As for seaworthiness, the M15 has sailed from California to Hawaii, the M17 hasn't. The Nor'Sea website language is confusing, stating "Montgomery 17's have cruised the Caribbean, sailed from California to Hawaii and from Cape Hatteras to San Diego via the Panama Canal, and sailed the length of the Mississippi." Bigger is better for what? Towing? launching? Cleaning? Painting? Buying parts for? Shoal sailing? It's a tough call; everything is indeed a tradeoff. Perhaps most ephemeral is the joy of sailing itself. Other things being equal, a smaller boat provides a more intimate, immediate (groping for words here) experience than a larger one-the sailor is a larger part of the process. I think that's why small, high quality boats such as the Melonseed are so popular. Certainly, the M-17 would be larger, more comfortable, and more seaworthy (I'm being an audacious outsider here. I had that problem with the studs on my Trailrite in salt water too. The air impact wrench didn't work, so I ended up putting a 5 foot bar for a lever on a socket wrench. Good luck. I don't have notes, but I seriously considered the Typhoon when I was boat-shopping in 2000 . . . I live in Rockport and have just purchased our 2nd Monty which will live in Maine. The original which is about 20 years old is here in Rockport. RE: M-15 adjustable motor mounts

Hi guys: The other day while motoring in through shallow water with the rudder up I had to sit back to the stern to get to the handle on my trusty Honda 2 HP, I noticed that the board on the motor mount that the outboard clamps to was DRAGGING IN THE WATER! Wow! When I got back in deep water, I dropped the rudder and moved forward but the board was still it the water. There are two adjustment slots for the lower position and it was in the top slot. I'm thinking about getting my Dremel tool and making a new set of slots to get the board up higher. Has anyone else with the new motor mount noticed this? I'm a big guy (200#) but not that big! Of course, its only a problem with the motor down and then you still have lots of power. Fair winds (I had to wear a jacket today, winter is hell!) I have a list of things David had written down about it. At present and for the last year and 1/2 it has been trapped and kept clean but not in the water. It looks good; has 4 cockpit winches, two rudders, one cut down and one designed to kickup. 1 Jib, 1 main, 180 Genoa, 1 Spinnaker. 1 Anchor, knot meter,76' 6 hp Johnson motor, Main cover, Cockpit canvas bags, Trailer, windex, new bearings and lights on trailer, but I need to replace one tire due to it going flat. Cushions are in great shape. There may be a few other things which I have not thought of. I had planned to go out of town this weekend but if we get bad weather and north is where I had planned to go then I will be canceling my trip for sure. Back to the sail boat, I have always considered it a" guy thing" so I may have to call a friend regarding any questions I can't answer; I know I should have listened closer but towards the end I just couldn't ask David to tell me more about the boat. It was his love and I couldn't bring myself to do it. I know also that it has only been in lake water and to my knowledge this lake. David bought it from an older sailor who belonged to the Lake Canyon Yacht Club. Guess you know where Canyon Lake is located. I tried calling you back but didn't get you. I can heave to for a snack with no problem or I can put the rail in the water to try and get my wife wet while she's lounging on the leeward cockpit seat. The M17 inspires great confidence and is just plain fun to sail in a blow. It's also an easily trailered boat. As you can tell, I'm hooked. My wife and I have spent up to a week on the boat and on several occasions have gone for 3 days without setting foot on land. There are other good boats around for sure, but I don't believe that there are any better boats in the same size. Sure. My point was I guess that if I was looking at Cape Dorys, I'd be looking at the 25d, not the Typhoon or Weekender. Your're right, there is no comparison between either boat and an M17. I had the Cape Dory 25 to and it was an easy boat to handle, would steer itself easily and hove too like a baby going to sleep I sailed it from San Francisco to La Paz ,Mexico and back in 1985, but she was a much heavier boat and trying to compare to the lighter - shallower hulls I think is unrealistic.

Hi Harvey, What I use to free rusted parts are: AERO KROIL Kano Laboratories 1000 S. Thompson Lane Nashville, TN 37211 This is only available through mail order; I've never seen it in stores. The other is: CRC 5-56 CRC Chemicals USA Warminster, PA 18974 The CRC products are available at automobile parts and supply stores: also you will find it in Welding Supply shops. Both products have done good jobs for me, and I don;t prefer one over the other. Usually it's a case of which spray can is within reach? Garage or downstairs in my shop. After you have soaked them for a few days, try warming the studs with a small propane torch. Heat does a good job of breaking down rust. Just be careful that you do it outside,; and have a fire extinguisher handy if things start burning (the oil in the solvents). Another old trick is to take a larger size pin punch and about a 2 lb hand sledge hammer. Put the pin punch on a corner of the hex of the wheel nut, then try hitting it with the 2 lb sledge. Short sharp blows will (hopefully) loosen the nut. What you are trying to do is position the punch so that you apply tangential force to the nut (trying to rotate the nut). The combination of soaking in a rust solvent; applying heat to the stud; and applying force with the hammer should do the trick.......... Next time put some water pump grease on the stud threads before you put the trailer in water! Good luck Connie
