Hi Mark, I got a Panasonic Camera to take pictures of the new board and the other adds and I am told that with my Adobe 7 Photoshop I should be able to move any picture or format back and forth to other formats. I ended up raising the trailer up with a floor jack inch at a time on each side, sliding one by two under the trailer frame, going side by side and using the trailer screw jack in front to keep the whole thing level. Building a 2 x 6 support under the boat and with the help of a few cinder blocks let the trailer down and suspended the boat in the sir. I had to raise the boat off the trailer 26 and 1/2 inches of the garage floor to get the board out of the slot. So far there is only two things I do not like. For one, that really heavy centerboard, lighter would nicer. And the lack of access to under the cockpit and cabin floor. I have just put together a model for my next project, a fold away navigation center that folds down when needed. I need to sail more and work less. Mike

under the floor space

very important question, on pre 1986 17-M How does the cockpit floor hold on to the centerboard trunk assembly and the hull.. Is there a space under the liner or does the liner sit or is glued directly to the hull. I have found a tiny amount of water dipping and can not seem to find exactly where it came from. It seems to be coming from under the floor between the galley slide and the quarter berth, but???? It may be just water left over from sailing spray, But I would sure like to see under that cockpit flooring, Can a inspection plate be inserted just in front of the center board trunk on the flooring. And last, Is the liner, part of the stiffness needed in the hull and deck structure, if the galley part was removed would the rest stay put or be loose and need re gluing (epoxy) in place Mike

HI Bill, Say, are you sailing a M15 or an M17? I have never tried to inspect the aft keel (bilge) area on my M17, but I plan to now. Can anyone offer any insight on the best way to do this? Mike, You don't have to do anything to your compass if you go south of the equator. The magnet inside your compass aligns itself with the horizontal component of the earth's magnetic field. At the equator, that magnetic field is parallel to the earth's surface. It becomes vertical at the North and South poles, which is why magnetic compasses don't work in those regions. (the horizontal component becomes so small that the compass becomes useless.) All you have to worry about is the difference between magnetic and true north in your sailing area, when laying out a course, which you will find on your nautical charts. Connie

Tod, Thanks for the info. I have not investigated that area of my M17. It sounds like the bilge can be accessed from the cabin, behind the centerboard trunk yet forward of my stock water holding tank. Can a person actually look into that area? (perhaps with a mirror and flashlight) Maybe there's some rum down there! special plywood

Lumber yard told me today that if I want to BE SURE I get the best plywood that will not separate over time when exposed to marine environment on my boat I should ask for plywood that can pass the 72 hour boil test , its called the B.W.R. test, has anyone used this plywood?

Vacation in FL

Hi all, thought I would share with you my recent experience in Fl. I trailered Seawitch down to St. Petersburg to spend the Thanksgiving week sailing on Tampa Bay. The weather was in the 80's during the day, and sunny most of the time. I launched at the Municipal boat ramp on Demens Landing in downtown St. Pete. Prior arangements got us a spot in Harborage Marina, not far from Demens. On my final sail Fri. the winds were 10-15, and predicted to be increasing as the day progressed due to a major cold front rolling in. I had full sails and we were moving along on a port tack. I decided it was time to start making way towards Demens to haul out so we tacked to starboard. My 1st mate, my 7 year old grand daughter moved from the starboard side of the boat in order to be on the high side with me. I was looking at the port side stay and before my eyes, it pinged where it enters the swedge, and from there in seconds it unraveled and the mast, boom and all the sails droped into the water on the starboard side. I hauled the whole mess up onto the boat, secured things with some of the line that was floating aroound. A large motor boat came along, and offered to tow us into the launch area. Once tied up to the dock, I was able to unravel all the line and cables and get things back in order so I could haul her out for the ride back to GA. Now, I will spend the winter working on getting the boat re rigged. I will probably replace all stays since I no longer feel like I can trust the existing rigging. This time I want to have more easily adjustable stays. As always, I appreciate your comments and the benefit of those of you who have more experience than I. ===== Time for a cool change!
