M17 Backstays

Jerry: On the 17 stern fittings for the backstays (chain plates?), there are two holes. One is for the backstays. The other is for an adjuster to tension the backstays. Which is which? Also, with all this talk of Sandra's shrouds giving out, it occurs to me that the rigging on "Audasea" may be the original....on a 1978 boat. What would I need to do to have you build me a new set? Do you need the existing stuff? I don't see any problems with any of them.....no meat hooks, rusty fittings, etc. Just a few slightly worn rings holding on the terminal pins. Most of the turnbuckles are new. Howard

I recently replaced the exhaust silencer on Dolphin and the big companies (even Defender) don't sell the particular model. I was, however, able to find it from a smaller company through a web search. Although I think West Marine is a "good" company, I try to spread my business around. Hi Sandra, At least "Murphy" was on your side for a change, and the failure happened on the last day of your vacation. >From your description, it almost sounds as if the sleeve under the thimble was the item that failed. Normally it is a press fit and holds the thimble in place. If it wasn't swedged properly, then it couldn't hold the load and the wire just pulled out of the sleeve........... leading to your dismasting. Your St. Petersburg weather sure sounds a lot nicer than what we have here in Connecticut at the moment. It started snowing Friday afternoon, and didn't stop till about noon on Sunday. We could float a M15 in our current depth of snow! Just spent most of Sunday digging out and clearing the driveway.............. My M15 is buried under the snow mass.............. But in a few more days, spring will be around the corner and sailing season starts again. Whoopee! Merry Christmas, and once your shroud is fixed M15 sailing only gets better and better. Follow up to Vacation in FL

Thanks to all of you for your responses to my posting re: my vacation disaster. Or actually near disaster as no one was injured or thrown over board. I will send all the broken pieces to Bob as soon as the weather allows me to spend time out on top of the boat on the trailer. The thimble piece has already been removed from the boat and that shows that all the wire sheared at the area where it entered the thimble. I suspect that when one wire sheared, and started to unwind, all the rest were forced to do the same. It has been depressing to leave beautiful sunny FL and have a week of wet, dreary, cold weather, along with the rush of work, and Christmas prep. I doubt that wire cutters would have done me any good, first of all, they would not have been handy and second, as I really needed the remaining stays to help keep the mast and boom from being totally lost. Yes, this is a new boat, been in the water probably 10 times all total. Also, since I read all that you guys post, I have been very conscious not to kink the stays when stowing on the trailer. Announcing the arrival of our "new" 1979 Montgomery 23!! After a December transport of 2000 miles from Minnesota to Oregon M23 hull #74 has safely arrived in our driveway. We slipped through a weather window that was almost as amazing as the parting of the Red Sea for the Israelites to cross on dry land. "Misty" is the boat that was featured earlier this year in Good Old Boat and she's a real jewel. She'll get a new name soon as well as a few minor additions and changes to suit our preferences. It was a long drive and we're thankful to be home. I'll add her to the MSOG registry today. Unfortunately, we'll have to part with "Grace" (our 1983 M17) soon. what compass correction?

what adjustment do you have to do to a compass that goes further south than the equator. Different that using a compass in the northern half of the world only?
