Hi Rusty, Installing latches on my sail lockers is one of the first things I did when I got the boat. I also put closed cell foam on the lids so that the sail locker seals properly. My latches are from WEST - don't remember the P/N - but I installed them so that it takes a bit of force to open them. The idea was, if I close the latches while sailing, I can still open them to get at something, but they don't just flop down by themselves and leave the sail lockers open. In the remote event of a knockdown, sail locker lids should remain closed. One of the first - and main - rule of sailing is KEEP THE WATER OUTSIDE THE HULL - and don't let it come inside.............! If you can't firmly latch your sail lockers closed, you have violated Rule No. 1! Connie

Rusty, If you have no experience working with fiberglass then get the Gougeon Brothers WEST System Product Guide and Technical Manual book - it's free. It is an excellent guide to all sorts of repairs; modifications; gel coat repairs; etc. and will give you a firm foundation in how to do the work. If you go to WEST Marine, they have the WEST System products as well as various other WEST System publications: "Fiberglass Boat Repair and Maintenance" - $3.00; "Gelcoat Blisters: Diagnosis, Repair and Prevention" & "Fairing Guide" each $3.00 (but the price might be higher today. This was from an 1999 WEST Marine catalog). Connie

Speaking of the M15 rudder, has anyone explored the idea of a beefier version of this setup for the M17? Jerry, was there some reason you didn't carry this idea over to the larger boat? I agree the M17 rudder is vulnerable (I have the damaged M17 rudder to prove it). Hi Rusty, Cutting out your current sail lockers is something that first requires a bit of navel contemplation. Not knowing how much experience you have in working with fiberglass is another factor in the equation. Cutting out the sail lockers requires some knowledge in "how do I solve the problems - as they arise". The easiest solution is just cut them out and make big useable sail lockers P/S; but if - like me - you want the best of both solutions, then you have to be prepared to do a bit of engineering as to how you support the lip of the cut out sail locker (and the underside of the cutout locker is not nice and straight either, so that requires filing / modification so that it sits properly on the supports that you have to install for it to rest on). As far as I'm concerned, my big port sail locker is an absolute "must have": there is no way I could put my fenders / fender board / anchor rode / chain and anchor / outboard fuel / mooring lines / pail and cleaning materials / and cockpit cushions in the shallow sail locker. My "new and improved" deep starboard sail locker now holds the swim ladder / the Bimini top / extra cockpit cushions; while the shallow locker holds the small stuff: car keys / sail stops / eyeglasses / tiller cover etc. You only have X cubic feet of space on any boat: it all has to be accessible and useable. Hi Craig, If you sail anywhere in New England you will have the lobster pot warp problems. The people that suffer the most from the problem are the fin keel / spade rudder folks, where the warp catches on the leading edge of the keel; or hangs up between keel and rudder; ...........and if you haven't protected the area where the rudder meets the hull with some deflector device, you stand an excellent chance of jamming the pot warp between hull and rudder. Then you really have fun trying to get it out............! Prop shafts hanging in the breeze and rotating, are just looking for something to grab; and they are very efficient at doing it........... My old big boat had the classic CCA design with a long keel and the rudder was attached to the end of the keel. The prop ran in an aperture in the rudder and was reasonably well protected. I never had lobsterpot warp problems; and sailed over many of them.......... With a Montgomery, I'm sure you will ride over the pot warp and then have the warp hang up on the leading edge of the rudder. With an M15, just lift the rudder and it's clear. With an M17 you are going to need a long boat hook to do the job. Connie

Since I am located in the upper NW corner of GA, I am wondering where Steve sails in TN. I have been told that there are several great areas in the TN River system for sailing. Having left bottom paint in virtually every state from Texas to Maine (and some more than once), I surprise even myself how every time that I drag, bump, or stick, I manage to hit something different. On the whole, however, I worry about losing the rudder more than the dinging the bottom. A ding in the bottom is no big deal in the big picture; just haul it out on the trailer (that's the beauty of this tough little rascal), clean it up, fill the spot, put on some gel, and repaint the bottom. Loss of steering capacity, however, will ruin your whole day. Darn, I just hate it when that happens. The new boat (our second M 17), incidentally, will be named GO, the tender, GONE. As in Going, Going, Gone. When Mama says to get GOing, she will mean it. We will be in Southwest Harbor, Maine this summer. If any of you are in the area, look us up in the phone book (Skip & Karol Langley). If the San Juans works this summer, think about Downeast Maine next year. The Mt. Desert area is truly as beautiful as the San Juans (but without the population). Cheers. Skip

All your points made about grounding are good ones. A kickup rudder is de riguer around here. I have seen and sailed a Montgomery once-an M-15, and a beautiful boat it was. It had a very cool kickup rudder that actuated by raising the tiller. Does this rudder "kick up" on its own when it hits an obstruction? Steve Tyree, P-15 #2098 "Amy Ann"
