Hi Folks: My yacht club has a power hoist and I've been thinking of rigging my M-15 to use the lift. Advantages are: I can leave the mast up and rudder on when sailing out of the club a lot and there would be less corrosion on the trailer. Has enyone done this? Do you know where the center-of-gravity is? I read where the factory uses the shroud eyes to lift the bare boat onto the trailer but they seem a little small to me. My thoughts are to install a 3/8" eyebolts, on either side, through the deck about 15" to the rear of the shroud eyes and 3/4" inboard of the toerail, backed with a hardwood strip and fender washer. I would use doubled 2x4 for a spreader and lift using 1/2" double braid. Most of the (1,200# ??) weight would be on the eyebolts and I would bridle to the stern cleats to keep her level. The eyebolts have a working load of 1,400# each and hopefully the deck could take the load. The widest point on the beam and most of the keel is aft of this point so I guess that the center of gravity is a foot or so aft of the companionway. Any thoghts? 14.1 volts charging

how critical is that 14.1 volts for charging gel cell , can it be raising to a higher voltage for quicker charging

MC, I'm in the battery back up business and a quality gel-AGM battery will outperform a "wet" battery tremendously. A wet batt is constructed for high current discharge for a short period of time (starter). A gel deep-cycle is constructed for slower discharge over an extended period of time.(house) Be careful how you charge a sealed battery, 14.1VDC max, and a smart charger to ramp down current. gel battery

Has any one experience with a combination of using the gel-cell battery called Optima, compared to the much cheaper liquid acid battery. The Pep Boys say the gel-cell batteries do not stand up well when used as house batteries and should only be used as start and run batteries. I plan to change all navigation and cabin light bulbs to LED's and I'm looking for a battery that will go at least a three weekend with out needed charging

Ah, Rachel, You are so right! Everything - well, almost everything - on a boat has to have two uses or else it isn't carrying it's weight. Now I've tried for three uses, and I think I've met that goal about once; but two uses is a must! Happy cruising in the Westsail. Connie M15 #400

When Dolphin's flooded batteries died last winter I replaced them with AGM batteries. They were expensive, but I hope that they'll last longer and the placement of the batteries means it's difficult to get at them for maintenance or replacement. One reason for not going with gel-cells is that they need different charging voltages, and the bronze-age alternator regulator on my old Yanmar 2GM doesn't understand that kind of thing. Things were different then, and our safety practices would probably be considered horrendously dangerous now. Some of the boats used gasoline engines and some were diesel, but all used propane for cooking or for portable heaters that connected to a valve in the cabin. But even then it seemed a tad happy-go-lucky when the owner would check propane connections with a lighted match. Nobody has mentioned one of the advantages of alcohol. A friend has an Origo, two burners and oven, on his boat and while the fumes from a propane flame are middling-unpleasant I positively _enjoy_ the smell of the burning alcohol from his Origo. FWIW: Much as I like the Origo, I shan't be changing the propane stove aboard Dolphin, although I'm very aware of the potential problems. Giles Morris

When I said I have an Optimus stove, it is a wick alcohol stove ( model MK1), non pressurized. Again, it and other wick alcohol stoves are still the safest to use in any enclosed space. Anything that burns has an element of danger, some just less than others. Bill K. M-17 (055)

Hey Connie, The kero stove we used was also a Primus. I made a priming can that put the exact amount of fluid in the cup when you tilted the can up. It was simple and kept the overfilling and fire scare to a minimum. I actually had more flareups with the alcohol stoves than the kero. I'm glad to see the wick type stoves for safety reasons though...they don't flare up if the prime isn't hot enough. We used "flame tamers" to keep the soot off...and to make simmering easier. Otherwise it was dirty! I used propane for a refridge once and had a gas engine (Chris 60hp)...and never got over the fear of leaks and explosions. It seems some folks nose gets used to the propane smell and small leaks aren't noticed too. I went aboard a 40'r sail and the crew couldn't smell it...but I did. The wind was blowing back into the vent and down into the cabin. Bill
