Hi gang, Let me enter the fray with my comments. We started out back in 1966 with a Primus two burner kerosene stove in our big boat, but , if you weren't VERY careful about preheating the burners, when you opened the valve you'd get a big yellow flame that immediately covered the bottoms of the pots and pans with a nice film of soot (and the overhead as well). A few experiences like that and my wife insisted on alcohol as a fuel; enough of that damned kerosene! But, alcohol has a lot fewer BTU than does kerosene, so any cooking is going to take a longer period of time. Like forever and ever................... Finally I decided enough is enough, and was about ready to convert to a propane system when we sold the boat. I had used propane systems in friends boats in Europe, and it's clean, hot, instant on, and instant off - and it cooks - right now! The problem with propane is that it is heavier than air, so if there is any leak; or the flame goes out because of a boil-over, you fill the bilge with propane that lies there waiting for a spark to ignite it.................. That's the danger, and the reason why in the US the requirement is that the propane bottle be kept in a locker with a separate overboard drain; and the stove be connected to the bottles with a shut off valve that you can actuate from the stove. But we're back to the old problem of learning to live with the devil.......... In Europe they have diesel engines and cook with propane. My friends looked at my Atomic 4 that ran on GASOLINE!!!! and were appalled. Connie, how dangerously can you live?, were the usual comments. But like anything, if you know the dangers, and are careful, you live with them very nicely. I lived with my Atomic 4 for 26 years, and was always very careful about gasoline fumes - or the possibility of gasoline fumes in the bilge; and ran my bilge blower to purge the air down there. Having had my fill with alcohol stoves, I now cook with a single burner propane stove on LEPPO. I make sure that the bottles aren't leaking: and am very careful about venting the boat. Is it dangerous? Probably. More dangerous than running a gasoline engine in a boat for 26 years? Probably not. But the instant heat: hot flame; the elimination of preheating burners; are worth the care and worry connected with the use of propane. Bills comments are right on target. The alcohol flame - if alcohol is spilled - is almost invisible, being a very pale blue. It certainly isn't as safe as it's proponents would have you believe. I've had the whole top of my refrigerator (under the stove) covered in blue flame from an overfilled primus burner cup................... It's learning to live with the devil you have on board, and respecting it's dangers. Connie

I like that Tod. That's the good use of space. Right now the our M17 has an electric panel like the one you have mounted on the V-berth bulkhead, but mounted where the drawers are. The battery shut-off is about in the same place--maybe closer to the galley structure. I've probably seen this on the M site but because my head wasn't into the problem, skipped right by it. Ever thought about losing the sink? Heavier canned goods go nearer the ctrline in a storage tub under the cockpit. Water is stored in 1 gal plastic jugs under the v-berth. has any one built a stern rail (to match the bow pulpit ) that could double as a stern boom crutch and support for mast when lowered

I have a single burner alcohol (wick) Optimus and it works great. Consider all pros and cons and the alcohol wick type is still the safest. It fits perfect in space aft of the sink in my 1975 M-17. A two burner would be nice but would need more space. Bill K

I think the Origo is perfect for weekending and 2 week vacations. Long term cooking with alcohol is ok but it takes a lot longer to cook, even with a pressurized stove. My wife and I used the pressurized 2 burner Homestrands full time for about 2 years and finally went to kero for the extra BTUs. The BTUs were a lot higher and cooking time reflected it. We used approx 50 gals in 6 months ( I stocked 40 gals for a 6 mos cruise and ran out 4-5 mos later because we baked bread) and less than 10 gals of kero for a second 6 mos trip. The pressurized version alcohol types were very sensitive to fuel quality (we bought 2 and both had the same results). Safety is the best thing I can say about alcohol BUT if you spill alcohol on the counter and it gets lit you may not see the flames immediately like other fuels. They are almost transparent. I had that happen in bright daylight and it was put out with a glass of water. Something to be aware of anyway. While cruising we baked bread every day and it was a task to do with alcohol. A small pressure cooker is THE item to use for an oven on a small boat, especially with alcohol. The fold up Coleman ovens don't come close...not even in the same ballpark for heat retention. Bread was cooked in a coffee can set inside the cooker...leave the pressure valve off and bake it just like at home. Pull it out and it makes sandwich size round bread slices. For cooking fish, put in a little (1/4" deep) water, oil, spices, etc., in the cooker and let it come to a boil. Then drop your filets in and close the lid with pressure on...you can turn the stove off now if only cooking a few small pieces for two. It only takes 2 to 5 minutes to cook. The Optimus Hunter (5000btu) and Hiker (pressurized 10000btu)are great stoves too if you want to use gas or kero in a small clamshell type stove. The Hiker has jets to change out for different fuels. Both are one burner. The Hunter is about the size of a styrofoam fast food hamburger container and the Hiker double that size. Prices are about $70 & $125. I use both for years while packing and kayaking with great results. Sorry for the long message...this is a cool topic and brings back good memories. Regards to all, Bill

miles between ports

Does anyone know where on the web I can find nautical miles between rts, -- example how many miles using the ICWW between Brownsville and Galveston, Or from Pensacola to Key West. How about Miami Harbor Entrance to Hamilton, Bermuda. -- I heard there was a nautical chart company that you could any put in any two harbors (or cities) and it would give you the air distance and the nautical distance using normal shipping lanes. But I can find it???

back-up plates

Is there and standard to the size of the back-up plates used with fiberglass , example cleats on decks, and anchor chocks, or stanchions /pulpit, I don't want to go too small and pull the fiberglass apart or deform the deck.

Is the Origo stove listed on the Monty owners web page a alcohol wick or pressure type, what is the boil rate for one quart, about 5 minutes or so or is it less
