Fred, If you do head for the San Juans next summer, I'll bet there are several of us Northwest sailors who would love to join you for a days sail (or more) and "showing-off" of the 23. Be glad to. It works really well. My anchor and rode rides in a Tupperware tub in the port locker. The linoleum (about 2'X4') is coiled on top of it. The linoleum is tied to the tub with 2 small lines a couple feet long that hold the linoleum at the right height when it's draped over the side, most of the cover being need outside the boat. After the anchor is raised and stowed, the linoleum is just coiled back up and dropped in on top of it. Boat Advise - Thanks!

Friends, Beginning in the Summer of 2005 my wife and I will both have summers off and are considering expanding our sailing, both with new destinations and longer trips. As we think about the possibilities I wanted to ask the group for input regarding good old boats for such an adventure. I know many of you have experience on other boats and would appreciate your feedback Our trips would be roughly 4 weeks in length with just the 2 of us. Our target destinations, initially, would be to sail in and around the Pacific North West; San Juan's, Desolation Sound, etc. The boat would need to be trailerable with our 3/4 ton Van with a maximum trailering capacity of 8,100 lbs. Target price range for boat & trailer is $15 - $20,000. Things that are important to us in a boat are; strong & sea worthy, sailable by 1 person, an old boat that we can invest some time and money into and use for many years and in a variety of sailing conditions. A boat that would hold the bulk of its value. In essence; a larger Montgomery! The new 23 is a beauty but out of our price range. I have only seen 2 used 23's on the market. What other boats would you suggest? Names that have surfaced in my reading are; Albin Vega 27, Contessa 26, Pacific Seacraft 25, Cape Dory 25D (some of which exceed the $20,000 target range). I couldn't pretend that it's essential, but I like it enough that it would be replaced if it broke. The one I have is the smallest in the range, but I forget whether it's Raytheon or Navico. I never used it on the Montgomery, but on the Vancouver 25 (about 7-8000 pounds, long keel) it works well enough. Guidance on mine is from a fluxgate compass, although more expensive versions can be hooked up to a GPS or a windvane. Actually, I very seldom use it under sail because Dolphin can be balanced pretty well and (yes, I know this is silly...) the sound of it annoys me when the engine isn't running, but it's wonderful under power. This device was a replacement for one that came with Umiaq, my M-15, which I used on Dolphin for long enough to convince me it was a good idea before it went incurably nuts. Hi Giles; Here you have the classic problem: Small, trailerable, low cost, but with limitations - no head room As the boat gets bigger, costs of purchase rise; equipment costs rise; maintenance costs rise; it is no longer really trailerable (trailerable in name only) requiring a marina or a mooring - costs?; - but you get standing head room; a galley; a head; a water tank; and inboard engine.............. That's the trade off.............. Decisions, decisions. After years of comfortable - elegant cruising - we had fitted porcelain plates / cups and saucers in the boat, and we had good wine glasses; with refrigeration; hi-fi / cassettes; we got tired of the growing mobs inhabiting our old haunts. This is what lead us to go trailerable and down size till we reached the M15. An optimum solution to fun; and Scott demonstrates that one can live aboard for weeks at a time; but it is a better form of camping. Connie

I can't remember who it was that mentioned harming the gel coat while dropping anchor from the cockpit, but Larry Yake came up with a nice fix for this problem with his M17. He has a piece of linoleum he drapes over the side that protects it from the anchor and chain. Rusty, I'm not sure what year your M-15 is, but ours came original with the port cockpit locker open to the interior of the boat. Our starboard locker is not open to the interior, but rather sealed off and has a volume about the size of a medium sized ice-chest. Both lockers have hasps on them for securing. In the open-to-interior port locker we keep our spare fuel, anchor and rode, spare lines and paddle. I keep our head sails in their bag in the cabin of the boat, and our keep our main tied as neatly as possible on the boom (we trailer sail). I've often wondered if having both the weight of the anchor & rode and outboard on port side gave our M-15 a slight tilt toward that side. I try to store the anchor as low as possible within the hull. I feel bad when deploying and retrieving the anchor out of the locker as the anchor & chain bang around on the gel-coat. I also learned to tie-off the anchor at the chain when retrieving and be sure and clean it off before hauling it up into the cockpit. On one trip this past summer I pulled up what must seemed like a small forest with a mud slide attached into the cockpit <grin>. Randy G.
