Hi Rusty, First off: I didn't remove the teak toe rail at all. All I did was cut back about 6" from the beginning of the toe rail (at the bow) to give me enough room to mount the cleats that I had bought. The toe rail was cut, leaving 3/8" thickness of the original toe rail in place. You cut it with a back saw / hack saw / or almost any kind of fine toothed saw. Then you take a chisel and remove the teak until you have 3/8" left. Use a file to make the surface flat over it's length. I had teak bits and pieces in my scrap box in the shop. I took some and made the filler pieces that widened the toe rail to match the base of the chock I had bought. Then those pieces were bedded to the inboard side of the toe rail. Now, with proper bases for the cleats established. You drill your chock mounting holes about 1/16" oversize. Put some masking tape over the bottom of the hole in the cabin ceiling (to keep your thickened epoxy from dripping out of the hole) and fill the holes with thickened epoxy. When the epoxy has cured, redrill the holes through the hardened epoxy to the correct size, put bedding compound under your chocks and mount them with stainless bolts and washers (if you can find a proper sized stainless fender washer - large diameter washer - that would be the best to use). The fender washers will spread the load better than regular washers will. Oh, and shape the end of the toe rail leading to the chock in a pleasant curve or angle: Mine is probably at about 45 degrees, or maybe closer to 30 degrees - it was just cut by eye and refinished. Friends, Thanks to everyone who took the time to write, and re-write, to my questions regarding a Montgomery-Like boat for multi-week cruising. Thank You All So Much! The wealth of information I received has given me an education in small boat sailing that would have taken years for me to have gained on my own. Not to mention the expense of learning things the hard way. Again Thank You All! To summarize the replies: - Many (most) of you left larger boats to sail Montgomery's because; smaller boats get sailed more, cost less, you spend less time working on them and less money in maintaining them, they are less hassle to launch, transport and store, they afford you the opportunity to sail a variety of destinations. In essences they are what sailing is all about: That is Sailing! - Another strong point made was; to be sure you REALLY will sail/cruise a larger boat for several weeks at a time. Many people buy larger boats with this in mind but...... many boats never leave their slip. If you just want to sail, then stick with an M-15/17, if you really will cruise then consider a larger boat. - Lastly, many good larger boats where suggested but hands-down Montgomery sailer's favor the Pacific Seacraft Flicka as the boat in which 1 - 2 people can comfortably cruise for several weeks at a time. Hi fellow M'ers I've done the whole routine. I built a wind vane steering system for my T-L 29, and it worked very well. Sheet to tiller steering also works well, though not quite in the same ranges as the wind vane system. However, both quit working when there is no wind..................... and that's the rub! That's when the electronic - tiller autopilot - earns it's keep. When you have a three hour trip from A to B, under power, on a flat calm ocean the electronic auotpilot is the only one that functions. It took awhile to come to that realization, but that's when I bought and installed one. Now, if you have the electronic autopilot do you really need a wind vane? ........and unless you plan to sail around the world, or just want to play with the concept, the answer is no. So my ultimate solution was sheet to tiller steering, when I had wind; and the electronic autopilot for the flat calms. Power consumption of the autopilot was of no concern: my engine was running anyway. Connie

Hi Doug, I had surgery this week and will be out of commission for at least four weeks so I don't get to work/play with my new M23 for a while. I may take it back out to Bob and have him do some additional work on it the boat, looks great. The only thing I have had done to it are a barrier coat and bottom paint applied. Have only had it in the water a few minutes to check the water line. Bob did take some pictures with the sails up in the parking lot, I'm not sure if they came out or if he has posted them to the Web. It will be a while before I go sailing and attempt any action shots for the Web site. We do plan on going to the San Juan's this summer with the boat. Hope to get in some good sailing then. Or maybe a short trip to southern California for a week or two for a shake down cruise. Fred

Hi Craig, When I single-handed my 29 footer, and wanted to anchor, I brought the anchor from the fore deck to the cockpit, then dropped the anchor from the cockpit. Reasons: I want to place the boat where I want it - with tiller in my hand. I don't want to be on the bow, then find that I am being blown down on someone else, and have to run back to the cockpit to engage my motor and give the engine some gas, in order to correct the situation. It works fine. What's wrong with dropping the anchor from the cockpit? On the 29 footer it was a 22 lb. Danforth; on the M15 it is a 5.5 lb. Bruce.................! Connie
