Hi Rusty, It isn't a big job. To get yourself up to speed, write to WEST Epoxy and ask for their How-To book. They give you an excellent description on how to use their products (which is what I have used for years; repairing and building new boats). They go into all sorts of repairs and new construction, and it's the "know-how" bible. After you have read that, the job is easy............ since there is no more mystery about what you are doing, how to do it, and why you do it. Small amounts of the WEST products are available at boat supply stores (West Marine / Defender / Boat USA to name the ones I'm familiar with). I normally buy their 1 quart size because it is so hand to have in the shop for odd jobs: boat and household...........! Connie

Hi, Having recently and reluctantly parted with an old Catalina 22, I have been looking around for something smaller, easier to pull, store and single-hand, but strong enough to handle some stiff wind. My ideal boat would be easy to rig off the trailer, have a cabin/interior large enough for an overnight or two and be fun to sail. I live in Santa Rosa, Ca, which is within an hour of San Francisco Bay, Tomales Bay and Clear Lake and I want to be able to sail on all of them safely and without a lot of fuss. One day this summer, while sailing out of Richmond Bay Marina, I spotted a really pretty little lap-strake boat (I think it had a pale yellow hull) that was among a small fleet of West Wight Potters in the harbor. At first I thought it was a new kind of Potter. Finally, after searching the net for a while...discovered that what I had seen was a Montgomery (15 or 17? Don¹t know?). So... Here I am, wondering if I have found the kind of boat I¹ve been looking for. Joining this list is, hopefully, a first step for me to find out. I subscribed to a C22 list after I bought my old Catalina and found it immensely useful and entertaining, but often wished I had subscribed before buying the boat: might have ducked some issues (rusty cast iron swing keels are a real pain!). Hi Rusty, My teak toe rail is about 1 1/4" high. It was cut it to about 3/8" high when I installed my chocks, but it wasn't wide enough to mount the chocks. To form a base that matched the base of the chocks I added some teak pieces - bedded to the rail and the deck. Then I drilled the mounting holes for the chocks oversize; filled them with thickened epoxy; and re drilled them to the correct size. The reason for doing this is to seal the balsa sandwich deck structure and to preclude any water getting into the balsa core via the bolts holding the chocks. Connie

Hi George.. Welcome to the list!! IIRC, the yellow boat that you saw was a M-17, as I know of one out there. It should be in the picture archives. I learned to sail on a C-22 and Capri-22, but bought a M-17. It is easier to rig then a C-22, but the M-15 should be easier. Being a modest sized lake sailor ( Lake Lanier, Ga.) I'd say that the M-17 would ve the better boat for your area of sailing. As to rusty swing keels...just be sure that you get one with the lead-fiberglass centerboard....mine is iron<sigh> My boat has been traileres all over the Southeast by the previous owner, and I've done a bit myself. Mostly with a '92 Ford Aerostar 3L van with auto tranny. The mountains of Tennessee were no problem...'course, no match for what you have out there<GG> Regards, Harvey/ Ga M-17 Stargazer #294

I added bow chocks to my M15 too Rusty, but rather than mount them on the toe rail itself as Connie did, I completely removed about 8 inches or so on each side. I trimmed the rail back to an existing mounting bolt that was within a couple inches of the new leading edge so it's still securely attached (and angled and finished the end off as original). Of course the location of those holes is a bit different on each side, so the rail-ends aren't perfectly even side to side. I reused the existing mounting hole from the trimmed sections for one side of the chock so I only had to drill one additional hole per side. Those existing holes weren't in same place side to side either, resulting in the chocks being in slightly different locations as well. But it doesn't bother me, and I'm easily bothered by stuff like that so it must be okay. Hello, everyone! My name is Rusty Knorr. I live in Seattle and I am the new owner of a 1981 Montgomery 15 (blushing with pride!) I have a few questions about my little baby. Perhaps someone out there with more experience with these wonderful "little ships" can help me out. 1. I am curious about the down-haul for the goose-neck at the main tack. There is an eye at the bottom of the goose-neck but no other fitting at the base of the mast but the one for the vang. How do you run your down-haul? Does the vang fitting do double duty? I don't have a vang right now... 2. The tiller seems really short, I think the previous owner may have cut it down. Has anyone used a longer tiller? Perhaps like a J-24 tiller? Rusty, I cut the toe rail height by roughly 1/2 - at the moment it is cold and raining: in the morning I'll go out and measure and give you details of exactly what I did. I wanted the chocks to be almost at deck height. The chocks are also used for my anchor rode. More in the morning. Connie
