I can add support to Tods statements. I believe when they first put out a small craft advisory they have flat bottomed powerboats in mind. The Montgomery 17 does very well in the 25+ knots range if the right sails are bent on and everything is fastened down below. John

So quiet out there lately -- guess everybody's gone sailing! As for me -- the windy city has not been too windy lately. Or else like yesterday you've got wind from he northeast, 4-6 foot waves and a small-craft advisory. Question: what would be the lightest predicted air (in knots) you'd consider taking the trouble to sail in? And for the M15ers especially, what would be the biggest predicted waves you'd consider going out on? (Just to get some discussion going.) rigging tension

I am a new montgomery 17 owner and have been reading along about mast rake and rigging tension. No one seems to put a numeric value on the shroud tension. When I got my 1983-17 the tension was very slack, it did not register on a LOOS tension gauge. What might be a good starting setting? I have heard references regarding that it will sail fine with loose rigging. I used to have a cal 20, and was always told that the rigging tension was an important factor. I put the wrong hull number when I regs how do I change it on my registration. Also would like more info on the jib furling for the M-17.

If any of you sailors north of here are planning on going to the Cruiser Challenge in Aug, feel free to stop by for a piece of the floor, a shower, food, beer, etc. We live in Orangevale, which is on the NE corner of Sac-O-Tomatoes, just off I-5, and is about 3 1/2 hours N of Monterey. We don't know at this time when we are leaving; 4 o'clock in the morning, or the day before the race. Hopefully, we will make this decision before we leave. Jerry
