I talked to CDI in Ma. they sent me to Cameron Sale maker in Seabrook, they said the FF 1 would be the unit to install but the man at CDI said I might install the FF-2 because of the off shore capabilities of our little boats might be considered. Short shaft vs. Long shaft for M15?

At the risk of duplicating old discussion--does anyone have experience/opinion on long-vs-short shaft outboard motor for the M15? I'm in process of buying a new M15 (!) and am thinking about getting a honda 2 HP 4-stroke. Thanks for any comments. Don, I have had problems with my M15 centerboard sticking too. If I do not fully retract the cb when recovery, the trailer rollers push the board up and it jams stuck with the knot on the pendant. On the next launch, the cb will not drop and I either have to dive under and pull it out, or take it home and jack the boat up a couple of inches until it drops. The best solution is to have the cb fully up and secured when loading the boat onto the trailer. I do not have any holes like you describes so it would be interesting to see them on the MSOG site. >long-vs-short shaft outboard motor for the M15 No experience in long vs standard, but a datapoint: I've used three ss motors on my M-15 (old Johnson 4HP, Honda 5HP and Honda 2HP). They all pop the exhaust out of the water when I go forward, but otherwise work just fine. The Honda 2HP has an air-cooled engine -- only the exhaust is water cooled, so this lifting from the water isn't a problem. Tod, That's another area where I could use some "expert" advice. I keep the rig tensioned so that when hard on the wind the leward shrouds are lose but not floppy. I set that tension after looking up the mast while sailing hard. I'm not sure if it is precisely where it should be, but I wanted it so it held the mast in column without too much pressure on the deck and compression post. It's a guess, but it seems to be working. Racing

Jerry, I've been racing my M17 for a few years and have finally got it going the way it should, or least close to it, and now I'm passing boats that I know aren't as fast. I have a PHRF of 295 on the M17, but I am begining to suspect that that is too much. I've seen some nunbers passed around on the site from time to time, but there still is some uncertainty about what is the correct number. It seems that after building and racing the boats you would know what is an accurate (or appropriate) rating for the boat. I am frustrated that my trip around the USA with my M17 has come to a halt. I was particularly looking forward to that race in Monterey, with the hope that I could get some tips from you on fine tuning the rig. The leg is healing up steadily but slowly, and now the plan is to do the trip next year. I am writing some articles for the Small Craft Advisor about the trip, and then I plan to write a book about it. I hope you will be at the 2003 race! Tod, I sure didn't see it that way, you had Busca going very well indeed. I'm not certain the rake in Miss T's mast is where it should be, (that's one reason I really wanted to talk with Jerry in Monterey) but once it was increased, it made a significant difference in speed, especially to windward. I keep it that way just about all the time, although I ease the backstays a lot when going down wind which is one reason you need an adjustable backstay to get the boat going well both upwind and downwind. M17 PHRF?

good morning, cat and i are thinking of entering "hula pie" in next sundays local race at scotts flat lake here in the sierra foothills. the boats are handicapped using the PHRF ratings. does anyone know the rating for a 1974 M17 with standard main and working jib? we don't really expect to be in the hunt but thought it would be fun to participate since we will be out there anyway. how about some of you other norcal folks show up...we'll sail as the Montgomery Team! if bob and jerry would showup they would put a scare into those capri 22's! thanks, ron and cathryn goodspeed M17 "hula pie" #025
