Tod, While you're on the subject, what type of line did you get? I bought some to replace mine last year, but the new stuff wanted to kink so bad that I went back to the old sheets. Long M17 Cruise ?

Now that my Sea Pearl 21 is sold, I'm looking very seriously at the M-17. I've been on the list for quite a while but I don't remember anyone posting about any long cruises in the 17. Has anyone taken a couple of months to cruise the Bahamas or some such destination? I'm wondering how the space in the 17 works for a couple beyond the week end or week long cruise. I'm out in the middle of no where in Del Rio, TX and although there is a large lake here, I've never seen an M boat here. On my trips to Corpus Christi to windsurf, I keep an eye out, but haven't been able to spot a 17 to get close to and see how she "fits". I looked at the cruising stories on the M boat site, and perhaps I missed something but I didn't see any stories that lean toward the long haul in a 17. Has anyone even considered a lengthy cruise on a 17? I plan on retiring to an RV and a boat small enough to be fun, but big enough for extended wanderings in the "islands". Harvey, Thanks for the input on the Montgomery 12. Yes, you perfectly described it. This boat is in Tulsa Oklahoma. The builder's plate says "type 12 number 144". It has been in storage many years. After learning more about it, thanks to research on the internet and input from this group (including the builder, Jerry Montgomery- isn't the internet amazing) I've talked to the owner about selling it to me. He has agreed but has no idea of a fair price. He told me to try it out and see if any parts are missing. It will probably be a couple of weeks before I can get it out of storage. The tires on the trailer are original and probably have rot after 25 years so before trying to move it I'll get new tires and put buddy bearings on the axles. In looking at used small sailboats, prices are all over the map so the value of an old boat seems to be what its worth to you. After I get it out and try to set up the rigging I may be back to ask questions. Hi Irv, Sorry, I can't help with any words of wisdom about the Precision 21s. Have never seen one, and know nothing about them. Montgomerys are well built: no oil canning of the hull in the bow area in a seaway; no soft decks; excellent design by a knowledgeable sailor who knows what is important and provides it: ......like good sail lockers and storage space; good cockpit layout; and for the helmsman, good visibility. As you go up in boat length, the volume goes up as a cube function. An M17 is a MUCH larger boat than is the M15, and the Precision 21 would be that much larger again. ......but: then you are into stepping a much longer and heavier mast; probably need a bigger tow vehicle; the boat probably has a greater draft, which limits your sailing areas and the ramps you can use; .....and the complications of a larger boat keep adding up. Lake Charles Messabout, Aug. 10

Lake Charles Yacht Club will host a ''Messabout'' on August 10. You are welcome to come on the 9th and stay the weekend. A ''Messabout'' is simply an informal gathering of boating people who get together and mess about in small boats. Usually, people bring their home built boats of the Michalak or Bolger types, but all boats and boat people are welcome. The Potter and Montgomery small cruisers have particularly invited. Others are welcome also. (A note to LCYC club members, please come out and enjoy the event.) There is no ''schedule''. People just show up with a boat (or without) and enjoy the company of other small boaters. Usually they share the use of all boats. The only planned activity is a lunch sometime around noon. Also, if there is enough interest, a sailing race will be held. There is no charge for the Messabout. For those who want to stay the night, there is room to camp on the grounds. There are also several wet slips with electricity. There are hotel rooms around but you will probably need reservations. The riverboats have restaurants and there are many other good eating places in the area. Lake Charles Yacht Club is located on the north-west corner of Lake Charles, right next to the I-10 bridge. The phone number for Lake Charles Yacht Club is 337-433-9257 and the address is 1305 north Lakeshore Drive. The phone is not manned, so it will not be answered unless a member is there. Coming by car from Texas, take the first exit past the I-10 Bridge ane take the service road anti-clockwise and go under the bridge to the beach. Turn right at the beach to the Club. >From the East, exit at the lake front and continue on to the Club. If you are coming by water, the Club is on the Calcasieu River right at the I-10 bridge. John- Nearly all the racing I've done in the 17 has been under the Portsmouth rule. I know that the 17 has been rated under PHRF, but I don't recall what the rating is. I believe that the original 23 was rated at 234, and it is a good bit faster than the 17. I used to have a book of PHRF ratings but I've moved about 20 times since then and I haven't seen it for years. Have you tried a website? Hi Irv, I know the work that Eugene has done to Whoa Nellie. When he got her, he took everything apart and examined it minutely; then corrected any small deficiences that he discovered. Eugene was planning to sail Whoa Nellie down to Florida, then to the Bahamas, and on down the Caribbean island chain. So, he reworked anything that didn't meet top standards. ( he was planning to do this without a motor, so you may rest assured that all sails and rigging, as well as ground tackle, are in top condition). I saw Whoa Nellie when Eugene was reworking things like chain plates and rigging. I believe that some of the standing rigging is new, and he also got new sails for his planned trip. I was on board only once, to help him pull her out of the water, because, Eugene was a Coast Guard Reserve Officer, and he was called back to active duty after 9.11, and so had to store Whoa Nellie for the winter, while the Coast Guard sent him to Newfoundland and later to Cuba, which effectively cancelled his sailing plans for the foreseeable future. I believe that Eugene had all the details of what he did to the boat and what equipment and sails it has on the M-list. Hull and deck are in immaculate condition. Hi Dave, I know of the type of Montgomery you are speaking of. I had a Montgomery 12 in the late 70's. Open with just a hint of foredeck, built in flotation under the bench seats, lapstrake with a sloop rig. It was a great little boat and that is what I was looking for when I found this list and then I discovered the 12. What a new big and wonderful world. It is enough bigger that my wife and I can sleep in the boat, small enough to trailer behind my Subaru Outback, and big enough to handle the 4-6 foot waves that can come up on the Columbia River, Although we did that with bare poles and a 3.3 Merc, it was a very comfortable ride. You won't find a more loyal owner than a Montgomery owner, and you will have to go a long way to find a boat that is as well built, as comfortable to sail or has a bigger attitude than a Monty. When I was looking, ( about a year ago,) I could only account for three Montgomery 12's, so I don't know where your friends is or if it was in that count, but They are really rare. I have a 150 genoa with the lighter UV material on my CDI and I agree with your sailmaker. I wouldn't want anything any heavier out there. It's already difficult in light breezes to keep the sail open without the whisker pole and sunbrella out there on the outer edge would be worse. What weight fabric are you getting? My sailmaker built mine out of 6 oz. material because I told him I wanted to sail the San Juans someday. If I had it to do over again, I'ld go lighter, maybe 5 oz. I have toyed with the idea of a longer tiller as well. I guess rather than Connie's solution, I would prefer a solid tiller, with a relocated fixture for the tiller extender, which also for me solves the weird angle problem with the short tiller and the extension deployed. And I hear you about two fingered steering. Which leads me to my main question... My M15 develops a good deal of weather helm in brisk winds. I steered Larry Yake's M17 last weekend, and his helm feels almost neutral, although the boat comes up nicely when you release the tiller. It's possible I've raked the mast too much, so I'm going to fuss with that this weekend, but I'd be interested in other M15 owner's experience in this area On the other hand, a longer tiller is going to add mechanical advantage, which doesn't solve the problem but treats the symptom. Then again, maybe I need to reef earlier... I was surprised to find that what I really wanted was a tiller about 54 inches long, and with an upwards curve, maybe about 3 inches higher than where the current tiller lies. My thought is to make myself a long wedge-shaped block to sit on the top of the tiller, into which the Forespar tiller extension fits and is fastened in place with a bungee cord. Now as a lash-up, you have the best of all worlds: the length you want, and you can also play with the height by varying the angle of the wedge block. My first attempt at this was such a resounding success, I'm going out to play with the idea some more this afternoon. There is another subtle benefit to this set-up. With the much longer tiller, it is two finger sailing, and rudder delections are very much smaller because of the added tiller length.
