Weight Distribution/Tiller Extension

Wrinkle Boat Mates I normally sail single-handed but from time to time have someone along. I have found that even alone and sitting as far forward as I can weight distribution seems to tend to be too far aft. This is leading me to consider adding weight forward. I was thinking a cinder block (40 lbs) in the forward compartment under the V berth. Would I have to secure the weight? In addition I would like to extend the Tiller so that I can sit comfortable as far forward as possible against the cabin wall. I have a Tiller extender but it is articulated at the attachment joint and I would like to have an extension that is a removable solid extension of the tiller. Has any one constructed one or know of anything along that line. All comments welcomed. George Merry Helen II 96 M15 #602

Montys in Mexico

A group of Monty sailors will be headed down Mexico way for the San Carlos Regatta. Following the regatta we will be cruising on the Sea of Cortez for a week or two. Hi Henry, Actually, it was my M23 I was referring to in the storage E-mail. My M17 has been sitting in storage all summer in a barn by Roberts, WI. I had plans on sailing her on Long Lake in WI this August, but time slipped by. It will be next summer before she comes out to play (again). Greetings Steve, I store my M23 in a farmers pole barn in New Trier, Mn. It is about 25 miles south of town. If you wish, I can ask him if he has additional room for your M15. Inside storage IS the way to go in Mn. No tarps, no snow buildup, no ice. Clunking centerboard

Thanks to one and all for this "string". I will continue to let my cast iron cb rest on the pin. Read your article, Jerry, about shaping the board on Coyote. Spent four hours yesterday cleaning up the cb casting on my 17. Have found that grinding cast iron deposits some very strange goo on my clothing that will not wash out. I may have invented a totally useless compound though, one part cast iron dust, one part dress shirt dye and three parts perspiration. Once I get that trailing edge down to about 1/8 inch I expect to be able to pull TWO water skiers with the boat this coming season. Then both my son and his fiancee can ski at the same time. Minneapolis Winter Boat Storage

Centerboard clunk

Now that I have the board out, it looks like the diameter of the notch that stops the board from go down too far on my 17 is large enough that I can slip a dense rubber sleeve over the thru bolt that catches the notch in the board. That should relieve that last "thunk" when lowering the board which has always set my teeth on edge. A second consideration, since the board was also deeply grooved on both sides where it worked against the bottom edge of the cb trunk when fully lowered is to adhere some sort of vinyl sweep on the bottom inside edge of the cb slot. The vinyl sweep should be easier on the bottom paint on the board and should mitigate the side to side action of the board in the slot. By placing the sweeps right at the bottom of the cb truck they should also help with the slot turbulence. No? Nice to have a situation like this to chew on at four in the morning.[?] Tyler's idea about using cutting board material merits further consideration also. Good idea. M15 Centerboard Clunk

I finally did my first water test of the M15 I'm restoring, but I noticed that it has a centerboard clunk- I can hear the centerboard rocking back and forth left and right whenever the boat isn't heeled. I just recently replaced my old swollen centerboard with a new thinner one, and it's somewhat narrower than the width of the centerboard slot. Is this typical on an M15? Has anyone with this problem installed shims or something similar? I am planning to epoxy on some fiberglass shims to the outside of the centerboard to increase it's width slightly, but first I'd like to hear if anyone else has encountered this issue before and what they did to resolve it. I also currently have a stainless steel pivot pin, but am planning to replace it with silicon bronze at the same time as I pull the centerboard to widen it. Tyler Davis, CA M15 #157 "Defiant"
