Henry, You are correct in believing the interior was repaired due to wrapping the transom edge OVER the top and into the interior of the cockpit area. I also had a large number of holes in the transom to fill - both sides. You can 'get away' with wrapping the tape to the top edge just be sure to cut enough away to allow for the addition of the tape - you will be rebuilding the edge with tape -(bi-axial is your friend) and grinding it back to a suitable contour. I did not take photos of the whole process as I didn't intend to post it - someone asked and now see part of the rest of the story! I would use plywood (epoxy and hi density filler make great slurry for bonding after parts have been coated with 'neat' epoxy') Use the old skin as a base for finishing your transom skin - save the H.I.N. and keep it clearly visible! Carbon is not necessary here. Glass is proper application as there will be flex at joint. Use epoxy for the repair as polyester does not provide a good bond. Fairing the cb

After reading Jerry's page about fairing "Coyote"'s keel to make his M17 go faster I looked at the cb I had just dropped out of my own boat. It was a very rough casting made of cast iron. Now I know not to every use STEEL wool on my boat but that knowledge did not transfer to the pounds of cast iron grinding dust I took off my cb as I feathered down the trailing edge to Jerry's specs. So after washing down my sidewalk with Muriatic acid and my driveway and my wife's car (I told her it was tree drippings and I did NOT use muriatic acid on that) I have a great respect for containing cast iron powder. It even stains plant leaves. GADS!! Fortunately the wind did not carry it to my boat!!!! Word to the wise. Smarter (?) in Rockport, Tom B

Dave, When you send in an email to the MSOG site, do you get your message content sent back to you in your emails? I do not. I can't tell if mine are getting into the strings here. In my set up for this email site I chose getting notification sent back to me via "bounce back" and the emails I send in are getting into the site but that is the last I see of any of the content so I don't know if anybody else is reading my contributions. Is there a setting I am missing about this? Would appreciate some feedback on this from you or anyone else on this site. Thanks, Tom B

Handrails

I'd like to add some teak handrails to M-15. Seems reasonable to put them right on top of teak hatch 'tracks'. Any recommendations for or against? Mostly want something to steady against when going forward underway. a

Connie Thanks for the swift feedback. I was thinking along the lines of a removable solid extension. Your suggestions are great and will be looked at seriously in my investigation. My sail locker is pretty bare I will move my ground tackle next visit to the boat (Slip @ local lake). I think my 40 lb. block that I use to support the boat & trailer when I am working in the driveway during spring preparations will work towards balancing the weight better. I have also thought about adding some fiddles on the back side of my bottom hatch board (3 pieces) to accommodate my wind meter, SPOT, Cell phone, drink holder, etc. My Winter project along with the tiller extender. Then, with the Forespar extension in place in the tiller, I had a 90 degree push / pull operation between the tiller and my hand. Goodness! However, .... There were times when I had the grandchildren on board, where the original length tiller would have been preferable to my new "cockpit sweeper" long tiller. My suggestion is: Dream up some means of elongating the regular length tiller with some sort of plug-in extension. My thinking goes in the direction of molding some fiberglass around the end of the existing tiller to form a tight fitting sleeve. Then you could add the tiller length extension to the sleeve, and would be a rigid entity that you could lean on if need be; and it would also be instantly removable. Another idea would be a piece of brass or copper tube, open on the bottom, that would fit over the end of the tiller. The tubing would take care of the side loads on the tiller. I could envision it being held in place by a long (6"?) strap on either side where you cut a slot in the bottom end of the strap to fit over a round headed screw shank. installed on either side of the tiller. Lift it up and it is removable; in position it would be rigid (at least that is the intent and goal) - and it would take push / pull tiller loads. If it is too loose, wrap a piece of bungee cord around the joint to hold it in place. Then you chive the best of both worlds: the short tiller for crowded cockpits, and the long tiller for solo sailing. In our M-15 #400 I carried my Fortress anchor plus chain and rode in the forward compartment to help trim the boat. I also stowed my 2 X 1 gallon water bottles as far forward as I could. I also rearranged things in the sail lockers to move the heavy items as far forward as I could. That helped the trim too.
