I like the 'danger' factor - the thrill of a possible sinking every time I go out. Floatation be damned! My father-in-law had a big thing about floatation - every time a new boat with positive floatation was designed, he was all over it and ready to buy one (30' +/- range!) We were going to sail the unsinkable boat to Israel - finally gave up on the idea - never wore his PFD though - go figure. Last modification to his last boat was a bulb attached to the keel - that didn't help much either(!) - but it was HIS modification! Bless Maurice and his 'modifications' (many worked) 'Maury's Schmatta' - an interesting 'boned jib'. (didn't work so well either!) But he was ONE HELLUVA sail racer! Forestay

Advice please. I put a CDI furler on my M17 with the required toggle at the masthead. That made the forestay longer, and even with the toggle bolts on both stays screwed down as tight as they go, the rig is a bit floppy. Should I get a new, shorter forestay? Add a backstay adjuster? I did the same replacement on our M17 a few years ago and bought the gudgeons for the Catalina 25 which are sized for a half inch rod and have delrin inserts that provide smooth action. They are built well and I recommend them as an option. Our hull number was 32 from 1974 with the sane two gudgeon setup. I also made anew nacra foil rudder from scatch with laminated mahogony. I can't for the life of me find the other end. The little bus bar is unpowered at the moment and the blue/green feeds it. On a positive note...stern light is now working from panel for the first time in forever like the nav light! Whoohooo! Jazz

Gudgeon measurements for sliding rudder

Hi all, Rick (of many rudders :-) is selling me his original slide-up rudder for my M-17. I currently have the early version balanced one-piece rudder, no sliding, no kick-up, only two gudgeons. So I'll need to install a middle gudgeon, and, see if the spacing on the top and bottom already in place is the same as the OEM three-gudgeon installation. 1) Could someone who has the original sliding rudder M-17 with three gudgeons in factory location measure their spacing and post the measurements? I think starting from bottom of keel at rear of boat and measuring up to the horizontal piece on each gudgeon would be an accurate way to do it. 2) Is the middle gudgeon mounted bracket up, or bracket down (and does it matter functionally or structurally)? 3) I'll need one more gudgeon matching my dimensions. I assume they're same as three-gudgeon models but will measure and post. Does anyone have a spare (used or new) for sale for my third? Hello Dave, Well, shiver me timbers....an electric flare is now available, and approved! Bottom side of upper to top side of middle - 14 15/16 inches - bottom of middle to top of lower 15 1/8 inches. Middle is flange down. We use Salus coastal PFDs and like the ability to clip in while on our M23. They are approved here in Canada. The sailor in the documentary " twenty eight feet in a little wooden boat " uses the same vest a great watch on the web . However, for our needs which are not 20 miles offshore, we are happy in spirited large mountain lake and north coast BC sailing with them until it gets snotty then comes out the full body gear . falling in the water here invites catastrophy.
