Well Larry, If you like to tinker with your sails, I feel you have the correct approach judging by Corndog's illustrious history of speed in the San Juans. But of course, if you are like me, one of the great pleasures of sailing is always having lines, sails, rudders, and do-dads to putz with! My boat came with the original Armstrong sails. I replaced them in the late 90's. I did perform the loose-foot mod to the Armstrong main. I'll see how she performs on my classic yellow M17 "Bonita". I got one of those real nifty gimbaled stainless steel ones that swings on a mounting plate, when I was first outfitting the boat, so I could cook while I was sailing! Yeah! Yeah, right. I never use it. I barely cook when I'm anchored. I took it off the boat last week. I cook my Jiffy Pop over a cheap one burner propane stove. Larry

I agree with Doug with regard to keep it simple. I am sending my packing list that I have developed for my two week trips up to Isle Royale. I don't know if it fits into the category of simple but it works for me. I do not travel with ice and have no battery system on board. I have deleted the items for my two daughters but the food amounts are for the three of us. You will see that I am actual packing quite a few clothes. What I have found is that sailing on Lake Superior is damp and clothes, once they get wet, do not dry out. Last year I also packed a ditch bag which I will probably do again next year. Hope this is helpful. Practical M17 wine stowage

All, If this has been covered, forgive me. I like to drink wine aboard our M17. As it happens, the M17 has a perfect, temperature controlled wine cellar integrated in the design. I buy red wine in a box. It ain't great, but you know, after two or three, who cares. I remove the plastic bag-o-wine from the box, and drop it into the shoal keel cavity. Perfect temperature (especially for red), and easy to get at between death rolls. It even works fine for the occasional bottle of good stuff. t

I suggest cooking on an Origo single burner stove. ?Sometimes you can get a deal on the on E Bay. ?I have used one for years and they work great and are ?completely safe. ?I have one with the pot holders addition so that the pot can't slide off. Bert? Zephyr, #365

Heaving to under main alone

No, Doug, that nicely maintained 17 on Cherry Creek with the green boot stripe is not mine. When I was just about to pull the trigger on getting a Montgomery, that one was for sale, but I was too late to get it. Would that I had. Instead I have a green boot stripe on a boat that has years of neglect, but I do have my 17, for which I am grateful..In my experience of heaving to, which I do most times I am out, if only to take a break, trying to heave to under the unreefed main alone is not effective. In light airs it is hard to heave to at all with main, backed jib, and tiller all the way out (often behind the backstay on that side), probably because the rudder does not have enough water flow to be effective, nor the two sails enough force to work against each other. In more wind, the two sail heave to works better. With even more wind and having the main reefed the whole process is more effective for me. My happy discovery is that the reefed main alone, with tiller lashed to the same side, works perfectly in higher winds. Again, the value for me is that I can more easily reef the jib and switch the sheets to the new clew (I use bowlines) before raising the jib when I am ready. Not so much noise and drama as heading into the wind to get the jib arranged. And I also don't forereach as much, as I mentioned. I haven't really had opportunity to assess drift under main alone, yet, but I believe it will be less. I will be trying my 85% jib soon and will try to report on my experiences with it. A bit of esoterica about heaving to and yacht design: the tack to heave to on for right of way is the starboard tack, of course; the galley is said to be on the port side for that reason, for it will be on the leeward side of the boat then, and your hot drink or meal will spill away from you because you are to weather of it. At least that is what I read, and naturally Lyle Hess' design would incorporate it (maybe Jerry has info on that choice). The one Norsea 27 I have been aboard (Al Fink's Futhark) has the galley to starboard though. I don't know about his other designs and their galley placement. I know many yachts are not designed that way these days, but ours are, if they have a galley as mine does. Thanks for the responses. David

You are correct in the normal heave too, the jib and main counterbalance each other while the tiller is lashed very far to leward which impedes the forward progess. With the tiller as far leward as you can get it will prevent aquiring enough speed to actually tack. In really strong winds the double reefed main is counterbalanced enough by the wind resistance of the bow itself. The main may have to be a little farther out than normal but each boat is different.
