Hi David, Thanks for all the insight into the M17 achieving a "hoven state". (is that a correct word?) Years ago, I read a NorSea newsletter written by Dean Wixom, (Herritage Marine), in which he stated disregard everything you know about heaving to when it comes to the NS27, a jib is not employed, the condition is achieved with the main sail alone. If I'm ever aboard an NS27 again in sporty wind conditions, I'd like to try it. Keep your posts coming! John's observation on wet cloths not drying quite useful. I try to make sure that I never get moisture inside the cabin if I can help it. On my two week trips I find that the old cloths can get a bit ripe, and spread the ripeness if you don't prevent it. I bag all of the fresh cloths in a plastic bag of some sort ( zippered bags from new linens work well) and as the clothes get used they go back into another plastic bag. The cabin stays nice and fresh for the two weeks but some of the "used clothes that were bagged wet suffer a bit. If I have to use foul weather gear, I put up the tarp over the boom before I remove them and then hang the foul weather gear on a hanger under the tarp. They stay in the cockpit, or on the cabin sole until I can get them dry again. Chad, I forgot about that. That is the other reason I switched to a propane stove. My late fall cruises often get below freezing at night and the butane stoves don't work well as the temps approach 34 deg. I usually make an omlette with dice mushrooms, onions and peppers in the AM and the Jetboil doesn't work for this style of cooking either. The fresh mushrooms and peppers will keep for up to two weeks in the cool air of Lake Superior, especially if they have never been refrigerated. Chris, Get yourself a Jetboil stove system. It is fabulous. The main unit is a small gas canister, stove with ignitor, cup with heatsink, and a french press. It all fit together in a small package. Add the larger cooking pot (with heat deflector) and you have the bases covered for hot drinks, coffee, and a one pot meal. I've looking for a system like this for motorcycle camping for years. Now having my Jetboil for three seasons, I can't say enough good things about it. My system is going with me to Isle Royale this weekend..... I talked to a fellow at Midwest Mountaineering just after I purchased my set-up, he was an avid camper and scrapped this THREE stoves he owned to go with the Jetboil. And, an added point, it heats up fast! For what it's worth. Have a fine sail in the Apostles, monitor the weather....... There were some pretty fast 17's in the San Juans this year, so CornDog didn't spend as much time out in front of the pack as on some cruises. But I totally agree with the pleasure, maybe even obsession, of tinkering with the sails, shifting weight around... whatever will make the boat do her best at all times. We're going to have to get these classic yellow sister ships together some time!
