Now I'm really feeling sorry for myself, that you folks made it through the Apostles, over many days, without mishap and apparently without shipping cold water. I've been through there on 27s and 29s and had a lark but also was pushed to my limit with wind and wave. I look back on the long weekend and realize there was no way I could get away, so I have to let it go. But do it again, and I'll have my 15 (Shenanigans) ready for the ride. I think there was a 15 in the fleet -- how did that work out? If the 17s were sheeting in for speed, it may have gotten lonely amongst the lesser LWLs -- though the lower weight has always kept my 15 up on top and skimming along just fine, especially against other boats whose skippers didn't know I was "racing" them. Those Vikings and Voyageurs must have been hardy folks. I'm still only cautiously interested in being on Superior in a small vessel. But I'm also within minutes' worth of a driveway where Gerry Speiss built Yankee Girl from plywood, in his driveway, and sailed her to England, holding a small-vessel record for it, for a long time. So there are lots of lines drawn in the sand around here, in Minnesota. At least when the sand isn't covered with ice. You saw a raccoon in a tree while *sailing*? That beats any wildlife/sailing story I've heard! lol Mark and Roberta, your story was so evocative - I could just see the glassy water, hear the swish and spray of the whale. What a neat experience. Was it a humpback? I didn't know sturgeons came up shallow enough that one could see them. They are amazing fish. We had a porpoise playing with us last week, but we were in our 14' skiff, not the M17. We've had pretty lame winds at the tail end of the summer here. We had a fun sail regardless this weekend though, gentle winds where my 3-year-old could hang out and snack and chat, and the 13-year-old could hang out up on deck reading a book, occasionally being attacked by a limp 150% genoa. Once he was even within a few boat lengths directly abeam. He waved his flukes every time he dove. Very cool. That compensated very nicely for the lack of wind. With no wind we didn't stay out too long and as we crossed the bar on the way in we spotted a sturgeon twice. Pre-historic looking things. If we only had some fog it could have been a sea monster story. That's the way it was on the Oregon coast this past Saturday. Not much wind, but plenty of wildlife. M17 wing keel -- sacrilege?

Hesitate to even mention this to the Montgomery faithful -- don't want to trigger a wave of purist outrage -- but has anyone considered a wing keel on a Montgomery 17? Have mine in salt water which can cause problems with the CB trunk. Maybe a stainless plate about the same weight as the CB could be bolted up against the bottom of the keel. Could extend out to the sides as does a wing keel. Would achieve same weight, same shallow draft, and solve some CB problems. Probably not the same windward performance, but might be a reasonable trade off. Dick Straubel

knock down

Well we had our first knock down today. All day we had No wind to just a light breeze . We were almost back and the wind picked up just a little.? Then Bam we were down. Slight bit of water over the rail and everything.? Came right up and then back down about three quarters of the way.? The wife and I were "not" on the same page as to what to do.? If we would have done what she did, ease the sheet, we would have been okay.? And if we had done what I did we would have been okay.? But we did several things at the same time and ended up in a run with the main straight out the starboard side.? never the less we got it under control in about 45 sec.? a long 45 sec but not too bad for our experience level.? Got the jib rolled in and the main down and sailed Pilgrim to the dock with just a bare pole.? no harm no foul and very good experience for future discussion.?
