And are built with top-notch quality. There is nothing in the market place faster, better built and as good looking as a Montgomery Sailboat. I don't run a factory; I run a very small boatshop. I built to order on a boat by boat basis. I do a lot of custom work when asked. Bronze ports, Stainless ports, extra ballast, Custom electrical systems, Idasailor rudders, anchoring packages..etc. This work is labor intensive. Quality takes time. I have 3 employees. These people are highly experienced in Laminating, construction, assembly and finish. Woodworking and other skills result in a absolutely beautiful sailing vessel. I use the best sails the best rigging, the best custom stainless fasteners..and yes....(laughing) the best cushions. This last 15 months have been EXTREMELY busy; hiring new help was impossible because all the good people are gone. We had a tremendous BACKLOG and we caught a break only when Pacific Seacraft employees (let go) began filtering into our shop looking for work. We did add some additional crew in the Laminating Shop and because of that we are caught up. Pacific Seacrafts Bankruptcy was good for us. Bad for the dozens of good people who are out of work. The FIRST question of anyone buying a new boat should be 'How is the construction quality'? First and foremost that is the most important issue. I can say that everyone has experienced and will continue to experience a BACKLOG of orders; especially if the boat is as popular as a Montgomery Sailboat. When we had an 8 month backlog and I actually turned down 2 M_17 orders so we could catch our breath. It is impossible to work any harder or any faster. Now that were caught up we can get back to our normal 50-70 days (depending on model and options). Also custom work really adds to the production time. One beautiful M_17 we did we cut the V berth out of and installed an oval bulkhead, custom shelves and inline potti area; with 4 bronze ports she is an amazing boat, but custom work takes time. Expect delays if you go radical on the interior. (I think BONES has a photo of that one...) We are really one of the only builders that entertain changes and options to satisfy the customer. This new Passagemaker M_17 were building (and installing a windvane on tomorrow) is going to be amazing. Other actual boat factories that produce boats for DEALERS (that Tod mentioned) like Precision and Compac are built on Factory Production lines for a large Dealership Network. Dealers who have these boats in stock can supply them right away. But ask for major changes on a future production boat and the wait will be many months. International Marine builds boats faster with more employees but those boats are piss poor sailers (upwind) and many arrive with a list of problems that are pathetic. That's not me. So try not to focus on the TIME factor. We can only go so fast. Hiring additional help is not an option because by the time you train someone the season gets slow and you have to lay them off. I can't do that. I have people that have been with me for 20 years; I keep us small and efficient on purpose. So be surprised if we hit the delivery time; which we do quite often. Be a little disappointed when we miss it; but get over it when you see your boat. Dozens of you know me; you've arrived to see me rig your boat, pack you up and shake your hand. (Heck...Gary Hyde even brought me a bottle of wine..!..Thanks Gary.!) One man bought a new M_15 from us and a new M_17 a year later.! The C word...Cushions. I inspect everyboat before it leaves for home. Scott's boat was leaving for the Bay Area early Friday morning; I was at the boatshop at 10:30 PM Thursday night, sleeping at the picnic table just inside the door, waiting for the cushion guy to arrive with the (late) promised cushions. He drove up, woke me up and I watched as he stacked them on the deck. We left. My man arrived at 3AM and hooked up the boat and slid the cushions inside the boat. Singing Rudder

Sailing even with a moderate breeze makes Spirit's rudder hum loud enough to drown out the Pillar Point fog horn. The rudder is new and doesn't seem to be warped. Is there a trick to stop this or is it just a Monty thing? Jim Poulakis "Spirit" (M17)

Repair needed for M-17

Andrei, I can't speak as to how the M17's stop pin is with respect to the ballast cavity. I can tell you that in my 23 the stop pin went through solid fiberglass (except where the swing keel slot is) so it would probably not leak water into the ballast cavity. Maybe we can get Jerry or Bob to chime back in on that. Guys? With respect to replacing the ballast. I wouldn't even consider doing it unless you were having problems. It is not and easy or cheap job. Buying lead was an education for me. I thought I'd find scrap lead for free at tire shops and places like that. NOT. If you have to end up buying lead shot like I did figure on around $1/lb. That adds up quick. In my case 1200lbs =......Oh I don't even want to think about it again! hahaha And I sure don't want to bring it up to Jo!. My advice would be dry her out as much as you can, seal her up, and hope for the best. Worse case scenario is you'll have to come back and deal with it later, Best case is it'll never bother you. Heck, you may not even have steel ballast...it might be all lead..in which case rust is never gonna be an issue. Repair needed for M-17

Hello Monty sailors, after sailing my M-17 today, when I tried to raise the centerboard a couple of times I lost hold of it and it dropped with a big "plunk". I didn't have the knot in the centerboard line which some people mentioned here, since I guess the previous owner never had it (stupid of me, obviously). Anyway, when I pulled the boat out of the water afterwards I noticed that a piece of fiberglass about 1in x 1/2in which is the very rear bottom corner of the keel was almost completely broken off. I was able to take it off the boat, by just pulling lightly on it. It is the area behind and below the metal pin that I think is the stop for the centerboard. I assume that when the cb banged down on it a couple of times, the fiberglass around it cracked and broke. The actual metal pin stop is still in place, but the bottom half of it is now naked metal, and it feels rather wobbly. How do I fix this? I have little to no experience with fiberglass and gelcoat, although I might be able to find either a shop who knows (but would charge me an arm and a leg), or learn somehow how to do it myself. Is this a delicate job that needs someone with experience, or can the job be described in an e-mail? My first thought was to take some 5 minute epoxy and glue the piece I have back on, but I guess there's more professional ways of doing this. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks, Andrei.

Repair needed for M-17

Andrei, I have a Montgomery 23 which had the same separation between the inner liner of the keel trunk cavity and the edge of the keel slot in the shoal draft keel. I've seen this same deal in a number of older Montys, now. I believe that in my case this allowed water to infiltrate into the ballast cavity of the shoal draft keel, just as you were wondering about. In my case, my boat had steel ballast and this in turn caused the rusting process to start (that's another whole story). I repaired the separation by drying it out and cleaning the gap, sanding it, filling it with thickened epoxy resin, and then putting 3 or 4 layers of fiberglass and epoxy over it. There are pictures of the repair on my site which Bill already gave the address of. In order to get access to the entire slot the swing keel will have to be removed. I agree with the other guys that $3500 is pretty steep. Geez, I sold my old M17 for $4500 and it was in decent shape. I have heard good things about the work that Hoopers does. Another M23 owner, Theo Petron, had Hoopers repair his 23's keel problems. Good luck. There is a fairly complete set of NOAA charts online at http://ocsdata.ncd.noaa.gov/OnLineViewer/. You can buy a viewer for your PC but I found a free one that works pretty well. They claim that you can hook it up to a GPS, if you want to take your laptop sailing with you, and it will show your position on the chart. I never tried this, but I did zoom in and print out some sections of charts that I wanted directly from my PC. See SeaClear at http://www.seaclear.net/ I have a Garmin GPS and it won't let you download any charts other than the ones you buy directly from Garmin. happy navigating Steve

Arizona's season is finally starting!!!

As of October 1 we'll be putting Dauntless in her winter slip here in Lake Havasu. We've had a great summer of sailing with over on the CA coast, but that's only a couple days each month for us. Now we can finally make sailing an almost daily affair. Last year we had quite a few folks come join us for some Winter sailing in Feb when they really needed a fix. I hope that I'll be able to entice some of you guys to come again this year. San Diego guys are you reading this??!! I'll post more on the dates if the event as we get closer and it's not restricted to only Montys. Last year we had around 20 boats and crews participate, almost all from out of town.
