Yeah, I tried the motor on an adjustable mount. Didn't like it at all. It was a pain to operate, and the boat didn't feel right with the motor further back like that. Got rid of it and went back to the cutout. The problem with the cutout is it's pretty narrow. Most outboard motors have the control arm mounted on the side of the motor, taking up a lot of space and forcing the motor to be mounted close to the rudder, causing clearance problems. I solved that by getting a Suzuki which has the control arm coming out the front. I was then able to mount the motor close to the port side of the cutout, giving me plenty of room to clear the rudder. Steering is done entirely with the rudder, since the motor doesn't have room to turn that way. Ha Ha! I'll have to get some of that special wax! I will put in a plug for my local sailmaker (Yager Sails), though. He built all my sails and they are excellent. www.yagersails.com The hull is painted with VC Performance Epoxy, which has some teflon in it, but no anti-fouling properties. CornDog is just a good old boat! Trip report

Randy Graves and I did a 5 day / 100 nm cruise on Pend Oreille Lake last week. Had some great sailing, a little motoring, and one day of winds too strong to venture out on the lake. Gusts up to 65 mph! We spent that day holed up in Garfield Bay. (Named after the cat, I assume.) Saw two sailors straggle in after getting caught out in the storm. One suffered a major knockdown sailing under jib only, and the other had his furling system fail, allowing his genoa to unfurl and flog itself to death. Then he suffered the embarrassment of getting pinned by the wind against a covered slip when he tried to enter the marina, until we helped winch him off. Also heard of a small sailboat turning turtle up on the north end of the lake. I took some sailing videos the evening before when the winds were starting to get strong. They're a little rough, but I posted them on YouTube (first time) in case anyone wants to see them. Unfortunately, I haven't figured out how to get the links to them. I'm betting someone on this list will have the know-how. Anyway, you can do a video search under Sailing Pend Oreille Lake and that should take you right to them. (4 total) Larry P.S. varnish removal

Hello all, I have always used nasty chemical strippers to remove heavy accumulations of varnish, but I seem to recall someone in this group saying that heat guns will remove varnish. Elsewhere I have read that heat guns will remove paint, but will only soften varnish and make it gooey. Does anyone out there have personal experience that will solve this quasi-controversy? CornPup had to stay home this time, while I tried out a two man inflatable kayak carried deflated on the bow. You can see it in the video's strapped down with a web type bungie. Worked out pretty good. Puts the weight forward, which is always good, and didn't get in the way of the genoa or hang up the jib sheets all week. I use a rechargeable pump to inflate and deflate it. Only takes about a minute. Doesn't paddle as well as the hard shell kayak, but for two people or only occasional use it looks to be a good way to go. At least for guys with roller furling. It may be in the way a little for hanking on a sail, or if your bow cleat is in the center. I moved my cleats out near the toe rails when I redid the sandwich core in the foredeck. Wish I could join you guys for your August cruise down there, but with the price of gas.... ouch! Keep Turning Left

Very enjoyable video series on Youtube. A middle aged fellow sails around England in an 18 foot vintage bilge keeler. He is doing a kind of video blog. So far I have seen 18 episodes of about 5 minutes each. They are very well done. Some parts are funny, some are just plain wonderful to watch. My favourites are some great footage of old Gaffers, Smacks and Thames barges sailing and racing. It takes some searching to find them all, in order..but I found it was well worth it.
