Hey Mark, Correct you are that the BCC and the Falmouth cutter are Lyle Hess designs. I think Lyle also designed the Ensenada 20 and I believe the Balboa 20 and I'm sure many others that I don't know about.....but......I don't believe that any of those were produced in a "Lapstrake" design which is the jest of the shirt. I could be wrong here, nevertheless, my goal was to make a shirt for Nor'sea and Montgomery Owner's as those two makes are so closely related. Sure would like to have one of those BCC's. Sean, What about our other cousins, the Bristol Channel Cutter and the Falmouth Cutter? Both these fine craft are prime examples of Lyle Hess designs. Some might even consider them to be his finest work. We are fortunate to be part of this design heritage. The abstract line drawing of the boat came directly off of a photo taken by Mark Dvorscak of Dauntless sailing to Friday Harbor in the 07 San Juan Cruise but was intentionally left abstract to be able to represent any of the lapstrake hulls, as well as to be a little artsy/fartsy. Love to hear your comments but the artwork for logo is finalized. It also includes a reference to our bigger brothers, the Nor'seas. Since we share the same lines and heritage. As soon as the pocket logo is complete I'll add the artwork and ordering directions and prices. Hey Mark, Unfortunately, the Yahoo site only allows so many columns of information ( name, location, hull ID, etc) and we are already maxed out. You have a good idea. I wish I had thought of that when I set up the page as I could have done that in place of ...say...the boat colors. Should've put more thought into that, probably. Hey Sean! Remember way back when, when I was trying to find the owners of the two M17s that share the same mast-up storage area as my "AMY" in Marina Del Rey? I believe it was one of many contributing factors that lead to the list creation. I'm still hoping to find them, so maybe we could do some sailing together. I guess it's to late to add a "boat registration numbers" column to the already very cool owners registry list you created. It would be another way to connect the owner with the boat, or is that to much information.. Keep up the good work and the reminders, the list just keeps getting longer every week. M17 Boom

Joe, You and Gary Hyde (and Bob Eeg) are correct. Properly rigged, the main will not hit the backstay under normal sailing conditions. And a properly adjusted boomvang will keep the boom from hitting the backstay during a high jibe or knockdown. But with the current boom length, if a boomvang isn’t rigged, or happens to be loose, then the boom can hang up on the backstay under these circumstances. Yacht designer Ted Brewer said that ‘When it comes to their boats, cruising sailors tend to be more conservative then an Anglican Bishop’. Perhaps I am guilty of this, however: Spirit’s boom extrusion is 8’-1/2” long. With the gooseneck secured at the proper height, the boom is about 2” too long to clear the backstay when angled up. When I originally considered trimming 2” off the boom I checked to see how long other M17 booms were. The boom on a newer M17 was the same length as mine (and the owner was considering modifications before I brought up the issue). But the boom extrusion on an ’80s M17 was 7’10” - another 1/2” shorter then the 2" I calculated to be necessary (an additional 1/2” safety factor perhaps?). No, I don’t expect that everyone will run out and take a hacksaw to their booms after reading this posting. I just want my fellow M17 sailors to be aware of this possibility – especially if they sail in areas with big winds and bumpy seas without a boomvang. Personally, I’m going to live with the boom as it is for now, because cutting down the boom may make it slightly too short for the stock mainsail. But, when the time comes for a new mainsail, I plan to remove the gooseneck and trim 2-1/2” off the boom extrusion. This is actually cheaper and easier then installing a boomvang. I can get the mainsail at the top and made a cunningham to pull down the boom and that solved my problem. I'm sure that all depends on the length of your luff. Joe >Chris, Julie: Jiffy reefing worked fine on my M15. I tried single-line reefing but went back to 2-line reefing, with the Clew reef line lead forward along the boom so I could handle the halyard and reef line both at once. The tack reef could be done with a reef hook on the boom, or a line thru it down to a cleat. Regarding boom length and hitting backstay, of course the M15 doesn't have a backstay, but on the M17 a boom vang prevents such interference. --Gary Hyde 2005 M17 sailboat #637 'Hydeaway 2' We can't change the wind, but we can trim our sails. suggestions for new boat

Well, you have a wide range of answers. My 2 cents worth is to have your jib halyard led aft as well as a jib downhaul. The down haul makes dropping the jib easier; the jib halyard helps raise the mast. For a better description, feel free to call me between 8 in the morning and 7:30 at night West Coast Time. I cruised a M 15 in British Columbia in 1997 and put extensive gear on my boat. I sold hull # 280 in about 1998 and picked up hull # 365 last October. I have been equipping her, but not exactly the same since I also own a Flicka which I keep in the water.
