idasailor rudder blade length

Jim, All, A better measurement would be from the bottom of the rudder's lowest pintle or gudgeon to the bottom of the aft trailing edge of the rudder.. Measuring from the pivot bolt to the bottom of the rudder could be like comparing apples and oranges, for two reasons: In an attempt to give the best possible product, we have altered the rudderhead's height and position relative to the gudgeons on the transom, the new configuration is very low on the transom. This allows us to position the rudderhead lower on the transom, specifically on the M17 boats that use three pintles, and use a slightly shorter blade overall, with equal or better performance to last year's Unifoil kick-up rudder configuration. Regarding the difference in length between the new configuration and the OEM mahogany rudder, I'm of the opinion that the various "stock" mahogany OEM rudders vary in length, making length comparisons more difficult, boat-on-boat, but ours could easily be a couple inches shorter on any given M17, perhaps longer on another. I could be wrong about the OEM length variation, however, my opinion is formed from interviews with M17 owners and the measurements listed on the worksheets that they submit with their rudder orders. The advantages of building using the lower rudderhead and shorter blade are a slightly lower center of gravity and a rudder blade that is easier to raise from inside the boat with the slightly reduced blade length. Bear in mind that we stand behind our stuff 100%, if you feel strongly that your new rudder will not perform to your requirements, please let me know and we'll take care of it. I would suggest that you sail with the new configuration if you are able (not sure which part of the country you are in, I'm at home and don't have that info with me), I would value any feedback you can give regarding fit, finish and performance under sail. We've sailed hard with the new, shorter configuration this year and were very pleased with it, but ultimately, you need to be pleased with it or we haven't done our job. Idasailor Rudder Depth

Just received the latest Idasailor kick-up rudder and was comparing it side-by-side with the stock mahogany rudder. My Idasailor blade is about 5" shallower then the stock blade when the pintles / rod brackets are matched up. It measures about 34" from the center of the pivot bolt to the bottom of the blade. In a 2007 posting Bob stated that the "new" Idasailor rudder sat deeper then the standard rudder. But before calling the manufacturer, I was curious what other Idasailor owners had for their rudder depth. (The rudder doesn't need to be mounted, and the measurement from the pivot bolt to bottom of the blade will not change regardless of how the blade is pivoted). Polecam...prelude to kitecam???...maybe

Uh yeah...I was bored. went out singlehanded with forecast of 15-25 with gusts to 30 possible. I rigged conservatively so if it materialized I could handle it. Got up to maybe 15 for an hour or two, then slowly kept backing off. So, here I am on a long reach back home, under-canvassed but too lazy to go forward and put up a genny. I decided as long as I was making 4 knots to go with it. Dug out the autopilot and the camera of 'Jo's that I broke at the Cruiser's Challenge (no operating viewfinder) found some sticky back velcro, thought about the cool Dana 24 kite video, and viola Pole Cam. I think I have seen this done by Todd Mills before too. So here it is. You can have a good 30 second laugh at a dork with too much time on his hands. I am about to purchase a montgomery 15 and would like to install a boat lift on my dock for her. I live on a lagoon that leads to a bay where I sail. Any recomendations regarding manufacturers, sizes styles? I have always had sailboats of different sizes, but this will be the first one I put up on a lift.

Okay, how do you all get to shore in your Monty's??? I'm thinking about one of the little pram montys the 6-8.? Also, If you were to move up would anyone get a Nor'sea 27?? A guy in my town has one he is restoring (ready in two years or so).? It would be a good time for me to put in a bid since then I could get some choice as to interior.? a couple dinghys

i have had great luck with porta botes as my dinghys on a variety of small craft. they fold into nothing and can fit inside little boats. they are very sturdy, my kids drag them across rocks and cliffs, slam them into rocks etc... and other than a few scrapes, the hold up. my latest, which is a little big for a montgomery, is a 12 foot, which always towed well. they are light and plane easily. i may build a 6 foot version of this for my monty: http://www.duckworksbbs.com/plans/origami/dinghy/index.htm. its nice to have a boat that kids can use on sailing trips. sincerely, greg monty 17
