Ask and you shall receive! Wow! Thanks Bill, for posting the additional cockpit shots. This boat has an interesting deck layout, I bet there's much more room below, but I can only guess, I've never been in the cabin space of an M17. The cockpit well reminds me of the cockpit set-up on the Bristol Channel Cutter. Does anyone know if this is a full keel M17? just wondering about access to the centerboard pennant, if any. Hey Jerry! chime in and shed some light on this boat, Please :) I was wondering about how many more types of M17 boats there are still floating around out there. How many one offs were custom made? Hello Anna, Just chiming in here. The registration #s are still on the boat (CF 6382 GY) You could try, as Mr.Keeler suggest, contacting the California DMV. They could, I'm sure for a fee, provide you with the Hull number associated with the CF #s That would tell you who the owners were at the time of registration, date of manufacture, as well as the manufacturer. You could try doing this on line at the Ca DMV website. This boat has an unusual deck layout for an M17, I'd like to see more of the cockpit. Bill thanks for setting up the page. Hi everybody, I wonder if any of you could help me answer a few questions. My boyfriend and I are looking at buying our first sailboat. It is a Montgomery 17 called Freebird. We have done some searching and found that some of you know a little about her. We understand that she was made specially in order for a guy to sail across the Pacific. She has a bridge deck to reduce the cockpit size. She is looking a little tired now and we want to buy her and make her right again. The thing is we are in Honduras, so is she. I could be wrong about the OEM length variation, however, my opinion is formed from interviews with M17 owners and the measurements listed on the worksheets that they submit with their rudder orders. The advantages of building using the lower rudderhead and shorter blade are a slightly lower center of gravity and a rudder blade that is easier to raise from inside the boat with the slightly reduced blade length. Bear in mind that we stand behind our stuff 100%, if you feel strongly that your new rudder will not perform to your requirements, please let me know and we'll take care of it. I would suggest that you sail with the new configuration if you are able (not sure which part of the country you are in, I'm at home and don't have that info with me), I would value any feedback you can give regarding fit, finish and performance under sail. We've sailed hard with the new, shorter configuration this year and were very pleased with it, but ultimately, you need to be pleased with it or we haven't done our job. Michael, Congratulations on getting your M-17! You won't be disappointed. I installed an FF2 on Lynne L last spring, and it is fairly straightforward. The directions are pretty good. The most important step is cutting the foil to exactly the right length. The directions give a rule of thumb for getting the length right, but I found the surest way to get it right was to assemble the furler onto on the forestay with the stay lying on the ground. Then you can lay the foil alongside with the bottom end lined up with the stop pin in the lower assembly and then cut to fit at the top. Make sure that when lined up with the stop pin the top extends past the end of the stranded wire onto the solid rod at the top end so it doesn't chafe on the wire. If you cut it too short, you don't get a second chance! As it turned out, the manufacturer's rule of thumb for foil length was within a half inch of where I ended up, but I liked the added confidence of actually seeing in place before the cut. I then removed the furler from the forestay, slid the foil onto the forestay, and reassembled everything with the forestay on the ground, then just carried it all aboard, attached the forestay to the masthead, and was done. You also need to make sure that your forestay has a toggle at the masthead end. I had to buy a new forestay to get this. I believe I remember getting around 25' of furling line, which seemed to be plenty. Good luck, good sailing, and welcome to the fleet! Furler on an M-17

Well Monty Sailors, the day has final arrived. My new M-17, Pepperjack, #652 arrived early this morning. What a beautiful sight she is!!! Today will be spent setting her up and doing a "dry sail." I do have one question for the group. It came with a CEI FF2 Furler. I think I can figure out how to install it ( I am somewhat mechanically challenged) but I am really stumped on how much line I need to purchase for the furler drum.
