Hi Larry, The tender of choice for a lot of M-boaters appears to be an inflatable kayak or canoe. I have a Stearns model that I can tow or deflate and stuff on the aft cockpit floor. I also own a 6'8" pram, but have never towed it behind my M17. I have sailed a NS27 once, she has a powerful, robust feel to her. She is a heavyweight to tow and launch, and certain ready for blue water. Fit the boat to the body of water you wish to navigate. Mystery dinghy similar to an M-10

Hi Folks Your M10 discussion has got me thinking about another, somewhat similar production dinghy that I used once. I never learned the builder, but I'l LOVE to be able to figure out who made this dinghy. It was after Hurricane Hugo. Our marina got wiped out... all the docks were gone. While they were rebuilding, all the liveaboards stayed on the hook... there were about 8-9 boats. One of the larger, more "adequately capitalized" boats decided that their current dinghy was too small for daily service, so they went out four days after the storm and bought a brand-new Boston Whaler with a 20hp outboard, and they let me borrow their little dink for two months. Unfortunately, they didn't know who the builder was... it came with their boat when they bought it. Anyway, this little boat was a real gem. It was, I believe, around nine feet long, (though I suppose it could have been ten) single-skin fiberglass. It had smooth, nicely rounded sides (not a lapstrake) and the bottom was mostly flat. Had perhaps a four-foot beam, fiberglass seats, and a little teak trim. It was very stable, and with a 2hp outboard and just me, it would absolutely fly across the water. It tended to skid sideways a little in turns. I didn't row it much, but I think it tracked OK under oars. If I remember it correctly, I believe there was a sailing kit available as an option, but the owners didn't have it. It was a few years old at the time, and this was about 1990. Can you think of a builder that might match that rather sketchy description? It was a really cool little boat, and if I could find the name, I'd love to hunt one up to restore, as much for nostalgia as anything else... though it would be a nice boat to have. Yes indeed. Lots of old Minto's in the northwest. In fact, I have two that I'm restoring. They're a classy little 9 foot lapstrake design, with teak gunnels, seats, and breast hook. They tow and row very nice, and are supposed to be great little sailers, although I don't have either one ready to sail yet. I'd trade them both for a nice M-10. Bilge full of water

I was just cleaning out my M-17 for the winter and I was surprised that the bilge was about three-quarters full of water. A small amount of water may have run in after spurting through the centerboard pennant hole (I generally keep it plugged, though), but I doubt that would have been enough to nearly fill the bilge. Also, the portable hand pump I had sitting partly in the bilge had a bit of rust-colored slime on it, suggesting that maybe the water came through the keel. I had the boat's keel trunk and centerboard worked on last winter to relieve a sticking board. When the shop first cut a hole in the keel to check for rusting ballast, they mistakenly cut partly through to the bilge on the first try (about a 2.5" diameter hole). Of course they reglassed everything, but I can still feel the cut round hole at the very bottom inside of the bilge right where the keel trunk is walled off. My questions are: 1. Does anyone else get much water in their bilge? I assume a completely dry bilge is the norm. I kept my boat on its trailer during the season, with the exception of a couple four- to five-day cruises. 2. Does anyone have suggestions on how to ensure a dry bilge in this situation? I suppose I could cover that hole area with a layer of thickened epoxy, but it's a tough area to access and clean and see what you're doing. I don't have a manual for my 4 stroke 4hp Yamaha OB. I want to change the impeller. (had dealership do it last time) Can someone let me know how the lower unit comes apart, what to watch for and any hassles or pitfalls I can avoid. Any help would be appreciated. Tim
